A fisherman was lucky to escape from a 14-foot marlin that impaled him and knocked him overboard during a tournament in Bermuda.

The fish got Ian Card just below the collarbone with its 3-foot bill, The Times of London reported. Card was on board a commercial fishing boat, the Challenger, captained by his father, Alan.

Another fisherman on the boat had hooked the marlin, which took off and into the air while it was strong and full of fight instead of being played to exhaustion, The Times said.

"In one motion, the fish flew across the cockpit and took him out of the boat," Alan Card said. "He landed about 15 feet away. He was under water and had his arms wrapped round the fish as it was pushing him under."

Ian Card managed to push himself off the bill instead of being carried into the depths by the 800-pound fish. Doctors at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital said he was lucky to survive because the fish would probably have killed him if it had struck a short distance to either side, The Times reported.

The line was cut after Card escaped from the marlin, and it swam away.
