Mid-County 16's Wins Title

By Tim Mullin

In a game where the momentum seemed to shift every half inning, it was Mid-County, Texas, that caught the last break beating Okolona out of south Louisville, Ky., 9-7 for the Senior Babe Ruth Southwest Regional title Monday night at Hunts Park

Down one, the Texas squad opened its half of the sixth inning with a pair of singles before center fielder Sean O’Connell’s (Kelly) sharp grounder found a hole in the right side of the infield, scoring one to tie the game

After Mid-County first baseman Dylan Mulhollan (BC) grounded out, tournament Most Valuable Player Jacob Lynch(PNG) cleared the bases with a double down the right field line, giving Mid-County a 9-7 lead and ultimately the win

We knew their big right-hander (Willie Kenny) had thrown a lot of innings, so we just wanted to work him deep into the counts,†said the Mid-County coach. “That’s what the plan was and that’s what Lynch was able to do, capitalizing on a 3-2 pitch for the big double.â€

It was Mid-County that also struck first

After loading the bases on a pair of walks and a fielder’s choice in the top of the first Mid-County third baseman Ross Foret (WB) hit a rocket over the left-center field fence, giving Foret’s squad an early 4-0 lead

The Texas squad would add two more for a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the third, before Okolona came roaring back, capitalizing on walks and three Mid-County errors.

In the bottom of the fourth Okolona took its first lead of the game. After a single, a walk and a fielder’s choice loaded the bases with two outs, Mid-County reliever Ryan Brady (NED) walked Okolona’s Jacob Smith to give Okolona the lead at 7-6.

But that’s the only mistake Mid-County pitchers would make the rest of the way as Brady shut down the next four batters he faced before Cody Laird (Ned) came in to close out the game in the sixth.

“I think the difference in the game was that we just had a little bit more pitching left,†MC’s Coach said. “Brady did a great job in relief, having pitched earlier in the day against Fort Smith, allowing us to save the big lefty (Laird) to close it out.â€

Earlier in the day, Mid-County knocked out the local Fort Smith All-Stars, who advanced to the semifinals of the tournament after winning their first two games. Fort Smith third baseman Logan Emery led Forsgren by going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run, but Jacob Lynch (PNG) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run for Mid-County, which won 5-3 in the second semifinals

That a boy Jacob, way to represent PNG well. I know your dad Rodney had to be fired up. Good job and keep working hard and you will be playing college BB. He has a rocket of an arm from the outfield and probally is one of the top 3 outfielders in the GT. Great job and keep up the hard work!!

Just for info O'Connell single loaded the bases and Mulhollan's ground out sac to the right side scored the run to tie the game. This is a good little team, they play well as a team

    • Sorry sir on my miss count. I was in hurry
    • Are they offering refuge to criminals? Or is it a Trump talking point? Refugees are people who leave their country due to unwarranted prosecution. I actually take care of 2 refugee kids who have complex medical needs   No, refugees are not criminals, and the assumption that they are more likely to be criminals than the general population is incorrect:                                                                                          Research shows immigrants commit crimes at lower rates Immigrants in the United States commit crimes at lower rates than the U.S.-born population, including unauthorized immigrants. This is true across immigrant groups.                  Immigration doesn't raise crime rates Immigrants don't raise crime rates in the communities where they settle. In fact, some studies suggest that immigration can lower crime rates, especially violent crime.                  Anti-immigration politicians have spread a myth Anti-immigration politicians have repeatedly tried to link immigrants to crime, but research shows this is a myth.                  Refugees don't cause crime in Turkey A study found that refugees don't have a causal effect on crime rates in Turkey. In fact, the study found that refugees may have a negative effect on crime rates per capita.
    • I think it's actually the first time ever to get past the second round. Some older folks might try to tell you about Scott High but I wasn't here when that school was around 😆
    • Smith is 78-31 overall and 18-8 in the playoffs. His first three years he went 23-15 overall and 6-3 in playoffs. His Silsbee teams are averaging making 3rd round every year in his 9 years as head coach.
    • Wishing everyone a great Thanksgiving!
