Guest coachacola Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 I was looking at the Equity in Athletics website and decided to compare LU's budget against other schools in the southeast and southwest of the country that don't have football. Just comparing revenue here's the results for 2003-2006:

2003200420052006

Lamar4,371,2774,587,7324,992,8384,471,325

Average6,295,1197,112,6898,052,8108,702,980

Lamar went from a $1.9 million below average in 2003 to more than $4 million below average in 2006. Is Rita the main reason for this? I looked at McNeese State's budget for the same years and it did not go down in 2006 like Lamar's did. This is not a good trend, especially with the addition of football, soccer and probably softball soon. Link: http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/main.asp
TexasTerror Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 I would never compare the budgets of Texas schools to those of Louisiana schools, when talking SLC. The schools in Louisiana have been operating with one hand tied behind their back for a long time due to how funding is distributed in the state. They are finally making some headway, but do not have the flexibility or the deep pockets that their Texas counterparts are allowed in terms of fees and other monies that can go to collegiate athletics.
Guest coachacola Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 I did more digging and noticed that the number of athletes on the track teams were reduced by half in 2006-2007. Was this done because of Rita or because Lamar was preparing for soccer, football and softball? The budget numbers for 2007-2008 should come out this fall so we'll see how they compare to previous years.
