KFDM COOP Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 Coaches gather, find common ground San Antonio — Thousands of coaches from around the state have descended on San Antonio for the 76th annual Texas High School Coaches Association coaching school. The event kicks off in earnest today and runs through Wednesday with exhibits, lectures and meetings, all of which will be conducted in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. There were a handful of events Sunday, including the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association Hall of Honor reception, in which the late Ronnie Bell was inducted. Bell was the Alief ISD athletic director for 10 years before dying in December 2005. He also served as a coach for 13 years at Dulles and led the Vikings to the state football title game in 1991. Tonight’s featured event is the basketball all-star game (7:30 p.m., Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary’s University). Four players will represent the Houston area on the South All-Star team: forward Terry Bembry (Bush), guard Abel Galliguez (Dulles), center James Blasczyk (Friendswood) and forward Corbin Ray (Katy Taylor). Pflugerville’s Mike Murphy will coach the South squad; Dallas South Oak Cliff’s James C. Mays II will lead the North squad. Other significant events during the convention include the football all-star game (7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Alamodome) and the annual THSCA Hall of Honor luncheon (1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Hyatt Regency Hotel). COACHING SCHOOL 76th annual THSCA Coaching School event schedule: • • Monday — Basketball All-Star game at Bill Greehey Arena, St. Mary’s University, 7:30 p.m. • • Tuesday — Football All-Star game at Alamodome, 7:30 p.m. • • Wednesday — Hall of Honor Luncheon at Hyatt Regency Hotel, 1 p.m.
