Guest coachacola Posted August 2, 2008 Report Posted August 2, 2008 From Gary Laney in the Beaumont Enterprise: No school has more Golden Triangle players on its roster than McNeese, which is to the Football Championship Subdivision (the former Division I-AA) what programs like Texas and LSU are to the BCS, which is to say it's a program annually expected to contend for a national title. With Nelson and Deron Minor forming an all-Ozen pair of starting linebackers and Toddrick Pendland of Newton going into August as the starting tailback, the Cowboys have plenty of representation from southeast Texas. And that is something for locals to hang their Cowboy hats on. After all, McNeese is coming off a 11-1 season that included a second straight Southland Conference season. The Golden Triangle's Team? ⦠While no college team has more of a Southeast Texas feel than McNeese, the area's real team, Lamar, will be able to recruit this year. It'll be interesting to see if the Cardinals are able to land players in recruiting who might have otherwise gone to McNeese. It's worth noting that the Cowboys' current run of success started shortly after Lamar dropped football in 1989. Gary Laney covered McNeese football for a long time in Lake Charles before moving over to the Beaumont Enterprise recently. Roccaforte, on an extended West Coast recruiting trip that started in Las Vegas, was traveling down a freeway between Los Angeles and Long Beach when a 5.4 magnitude quake rattled Southern California on Tuesday. “I didn’t even know about it until I got to the gym in Long Beach and they wouldn’t let anybody inside,†said the Cardinal coach. “Riding in a car, I didn’t feel anything. I told everybody I survived a hurricane in Beaumont, so this wasn’t that big a deal. But people out here are talking about the “big one,†not being far behind, so it’s making me a little nervous.†Roc was happy to get back to Beaumont on Friday. Perhaps with this sportswriter stating the same maybe he'll start believing it.
TexasTerror Posted August 3, 2008 Report Posted August 3, 2008 I believe I've stated the same thing to Texas Terror on several occasions. Perhaps with this sportswriter stating the same maybe he'll start believing it. And I've retorted with practically the same thing...one, being that you can not solely build a team from SETX (as a few of the narrow-minded on this board have stated) and secondly... McNeese is preparing for this and will maintain their recruiting levels. They may not bring in as many players from SETX, but that's not just because of Lamar, but because more and more FCS teams are coming in to the state and more FBS teams. They'll still recruiting wars in the area on a routine basis, just as they do head to head in the city of Lafayette against ULL, an FBS program. ABR3, you see the recent article about the amount of Texas guys on Big 12 rosters? Incredible! SHSU has changed their recruiting habits in recent years because of how many teams are on the ground here in the state, it's ridiculous. This past year, we started heading further west and further south. We even plucked a few more kids from out of state this past year than we have in the past. There were years when we had no one from out of Texas! This year, we have 12...

Lamar football and Texas st FBS will kill McNeese football. Unless SLC goes FBS.
HouTexan Posted August 4, 2008 Report Posted August 4, 2008 If you guys haven't checked out www.anygivensaturday.com please do. Texas Terror likes to post everything from the LU board on there for the entire FCS world to see. There is great info about the subdivision and what's going on in the entire FCS world. Frankly, I'm tired of trying to keep the positive spin on LU there. A little help.

I'd say Texas schools like UT, A&M, Baylor, and Tech will have 85% of their players from Texas.
