Lamar Men's Hoop Schedule

Recommended Posts

That Denver contest at home is going to be rough as they use all 35 seconds of the play clock...nice job in securing La-Lafayette for a multi-year deal, makes sense for both sides (hope SHSU gets the same thing with them)...four sub-Division I games (SHSU will have that I'm sure -- we have one opening that we are trying to get a Div I)...

I like the MTE with Ohio, Indiana State and Louisville. I think you guys can go 2-1 there...though that may be tough. Four games in six days.

Lamar athletic officials have announced the 2008-09 men's basketball schedule that features 14 home contests and seven games against teams that participated in the postseason a year ago.

Among the notable non-conference games that appear are road games against Kentucky, Memphis, Louisville - as part of the Cardinals' three-day tournament, Rice and the start of a multi-year series with long-time rival Louisiana-Lafayette.

"It's going to be good for (the players) to play at Rupp Arena, Freedom Hall and the FedEx Forum," said Steve Roccaforte, who is entering his third year as Lamar's head coach and sixth consecutive year in Beaumont. "That will prepare us for conference play.

ESPNU will televise one LU home SLC game as well.

Thats awesome news! That should get some more fans out as well. Of course, winning always gets the fans out, and a 1-5 start this year won't help but i could see a 5-0 start with this schedule.

I don't like having 4 home games against sub D1 opponents.  So before conference play begins, Lamar will only have 2 home games against D1 opponents.  My guess why Roc does this is (1) build confidence in the players by scheduling "gimme" games, (2) Lamar pays them less than no-name D1 schools, and (3) a loss against a bad D1 team really drags down the RPI.  Other than that I like the schedule.  Should be a fun season to follow.

More than likely, Roc is looking for home-and-home series. The SWAC schools have upped their ante in terms of game day guarantees in recent years and unless you give them a home-and-home (which is not ideal for many reasons), it's not a good idea. Bet UTPA requests a return date too and for those who have been to Edinburg, it's not worth anyone's while!

That makes sense, and it's hard to get "name" teams to Beaumont (or any SLC venue).

Lamar and SHSU have done the best in that category...SHSU has had Fresno State, Central Florida and Texas Tech plus a Wisconsin-Milwaukee team that made some NCAA noise just prior to coming to Huntsville. Lamar has had Texas Tech, BYU, Oral Roberts and Wyoming.

Here's a list of known Div I home games at SLC venues

OOC home games...

UNC-Greensboro at Central Arkansas

St. Bonaventure at Central Arkansas

Tennessee-Martin at Central Arkansas

Denver at Lamar

Texas Tech at Lamar

Florida Atlantic at McNeese

Louisiana Tech at McNeese

Samford at McNeese

New Orleans at Nicholls State

Miami (OH) at Northwestern State

North Texas at Sam Houston State

Texas Southern at Sam Houston State

New Orleans at Texas State-San Marcos

SELA and SFA don't host any DI opponents?

Key word was "known". Not all the schools have announced schedules. If I am not mistaken, only three (UTA, Lamar and McNeese) have. McNeese has the best one IMO at this point with a great balance of competition and winnable games plus most Div I home games. Lamar has more attractive opponents and UTA's leaves a lot to be desired...

I say give them home and home. PV and Texas Southern would put a few extra butts in a seat at the Montagne.

Then you get a ample serving of awful officiating -- almost cost SHSU (at TSU) and TXST (at PVA&M) last year. There's other problems associated with playing with the schools on the hardwood, but I'll refrain...
