Guest coachacola Posted August 3, 2008 Report Posted August 3, 2008 On Thursday, the Lamar University Cardinal Club raised nearly $60,000 during its Third Annual Phon-a-thon. More than 60 coaches, Cardinal Club board members and Lamar supporters made calls to area alumni, current and former supporters and new donors with a goal of raising $50,000 in pledges and donations. "To see that many volunteers and coaches taking time out of their busy schedules to help raise funds for the Cardinal Club is absolutely amazing," Assistant Athletic Director for Development Brad McGowan said. "The athletic department, much like the University as a whole, has made great strides over the past several years and it's great to see the support building in the community. We can't continue the growth and success without that support." Each year it costs over $1.3 million for the University to fund scholarships for student-athletes. With the addition of Football in 2010, those costs will rise to over $2 million. Since state funds cannot help with that cost, donations from alumni and local supporters are vital to the success of Lamar Athletics.
