One of the top running backs in the nation is on the verge of making a verbal commitment. Will he pledge to the LSU Tigers or the Texas Aggies? Aggie Websider's David Sandhop spoke to Michael about his school choice

With fall practices starting up all over the country for both college programs and high school teams, recruiting has taken a brief backseat for most colleges and recruits as the season approaches with the NCAA-mandated contact period still over three weeks away. That’s especially true for the Texas A&M staff, who have almost completed the 2009 class with 25 commitments in place. However, with a few mid-term enrollees in that group, the Aggies still have room for a couple of blue chip prospects and they don’t get any better than Beaumont Westbrook (TX) running back Christine Michael. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound running back is chomping at the bit to get started with the 2008 season, which gets underway for the Westbrook Bruins next Monday.

“Oh yeah, I’m ready to put the pads on now,†Michael said. “I’m ready to show everybody what I can do and help my team win. I’ve worked harder this offseason than ever before and I feel I’ve gotten stronger, faster, and quicker. I just want to play hard, be humble, and contribute to the team’s success.â€

As a junior, Michael proved to be one of the state’s best running backs in a state that is known to produce great running backs. However, at the Top Gun Camp in Florida last month, Michael proved to be one of the nation’s best backs garnering widespread praise and chosen as one of the best camp performers at the elite national event. In particular, he surprised observers with his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield, something that he hasn’t shown on the field in Beaumont.

“I’ve always been able to catch the ball. It comes naturally to me I guess,†Michael said. “I was a wide receiver in middle school, so it comes from that as well.â€

However, before Michael straps on the helmet and pads for the team’s August 29 season opener, the future 5-star running back has a little business to finish in terms of his recruitment. Michael would like to make his verbal pledge before the first game, which means he’s only 2-3 weeks away from his big announcement.

“I definitely still want to make a decision before the season starts,†Michael said. “Right now it’s down to LSU and Texas A&M. I’d have to say that I’m feeling LSU a little more right now. Yeah, I’d say LSU for now.â€

That’s a change from a couple of weeks ago when he named the Aggies as his leader. Michael was scheduled to attend the LSU Elite Camp during that time, but was unable to make the event.

“I’ve seen LSU several times so it’s not like I needed to see it again,†Michael said. “I’m just feeling LSU right now.â€

However, Michael made it clear that anything can happen between now and when he makes his decision. He’s still keeping an open mind to his schools and leaving the decision to a higher source.

“I’m still keeping my options open,†Michael said. “I’ve prayed to God every night asking him where he wants me to go, and when he gives me that sign then I’ll make my decision. I’m not there yet.â€
