KFDM COOP Posted August 13, 2008 Report Posted August 13, 2008 Volleyball teams set for ‘Locals Only’ at BH By Nick Cioci The Baytown Sun Published August 14, 2008 - Updated 39 minutes ago Barbers Hill will host its second annual “Locals Only†volleyball tournament today through Saturday. Barbers Hill head coach John Leonard said they came up with the idea last January. “We kept going to other places and got stuck in the back of 32- and 64-team brackets,†he said. “We realized then, ‘We have such great facilities at Barbers Hill, why not use them?’ “Everyone likes the big gym. There aren’t balls rolling on your court so you don’t have to stop all the time and replay points.†Teams participating include Brazoswood, Dickinson, Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Liberty, Nederland and Baytown Sterling. Action will start today at 1 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m. The tournament is round-robin style where each team will play everyone else just one time. The teams will play each other best three out of five games per match. “I feel that is another benefit of our tournament,†Leonard said. “At these bigger tournaments most teams just play two out of three, instead of three out of five. “With it being early in the year, a lot of teams don’t have a set roster and this gives them more playing time.†Even with fewer teams then a normal tournament, Leonard said everyone is still tired on Saturday. “We have good hospitality,†he said. “Instead of buying trophies we buy gifts for the coaches. It’s just good, fun, friendly competition. “Even the referees we get from the Beaumont chapter come out and are friendly with the coaches.†By scheduling all matches early on Friday and Saturday (the last match is at noon both days), participating teams are able to schedule a JV or freshman match those days as well.
