All varsity players - there are 39 on a roster provided by coach Jeff Mathews - survived a two-week "boot camp" in January that players said eliminated quitters. The boot camp consisted of several unconventional exercises. One called for players to flip monster truck tires end-over-end. Another called for players to crawl backward on their hands and feet up the stadium bleachers. Some players swung sledgehammers while others did pull-ups. For how long players did those exercises was determined by the length of time it took each group of six players to complete another exercise, which was to carry a rolled-up, 600-pound mat once around the track. "If it took five minutes, everyone had to be at their stations for five minutes," senior Theron Reynolds said. Some players quit during the boot camp and never returned.
