Guest coachacola Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Indeed, UTSA is currently one of the largest Division I universities without a football team. Fueled mostly by basketball and volleyball, its total athletic revenues of just over $9 million place it second among league schools, just behind pigskin-playing Texas State. The school's 5,000-seat Convocation Center (aka The Bird Cage) easily ranks as the Southland's most sparkling. I don't think this guy's been to any arenas in the conference.
TexasTerror Posted August 21, 2008 Author Report Posted August 21, 2008 I don't think this guy's been to any arenas in the conference. You don't think UTSA's is the "most sparkling"...? I think so. Been to most every arena in the conference and it has the "cleanest look" by far...
Guest coachacola Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 I've never been in it so I was going by what I've seen on TV. Maybe it does look a lot better in person. They did spend $2 million on it a few years ago so maybe it is the most sparkling. I do know the Montagne Center is not the most sparkling, it's looking dated and needs a makeover.
Guest abovetherim Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 There isn't a SLC school with a basketball facility to come close to matching Lamar. I too have been to several SLC arenas. I agree the Montagne is showing her years but there isn't a better place to watch a basketball game in the SLC.
Lazeek Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Montagne needs a drastic make over. Here is a list of what I feel needs to improve attendance and the atmosphere at the Montagne: 1. New center court scoreboard. 2. Jumbotron on either end of the court or on both ends. 3. Better concession services. The food is terrible. Not that people plan to eat dinner at the game, but man it is bad. I have been to SHSU the last two years for the AAA Regional Tourney and the concessions are way better than LU. Time to end the contract with Chartwells and allow someone else to run it. 4. LU go undefeated at home!!!! ;D

Lamar doesn't have the "sparkle" of a UTSA or from what I am reading, the amazing popcorn of a SHSU.
Guest mffl Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 When was the last time you went to a basketball game at Lamar? The tributes to all of the former Cardinal coaches and great players in the walk in areas look great. I think they're taking their time with repairing it but soon enough they will add a basketball practice facility in there.
Lazeek Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Not sure who you were directing that to MFFL, but I agree the concourse level of the montagne is updated and very nice. Still need the improvements in the arena area and concessions.
Guest abovetherim Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Pretty sure he was directing his remarks toward Texas Terror. After all, you are a season ticket holder and make most of the games. Agree with you regarding the need for updates in the Montagne Center. For me, it's the scoreboard and a practice facility. Probably the two most expensive needs. ;D

I was there last November and can tell you that it's "sparkling". No questioning that Montagne is one of the best facilities in the SLC, if not the best -- but by no means does it have the "new", "fresh" and as noted in the ESPN article, "sparkling" look that the Convocation Center has. Just seems like the building is "alive".

Edit: Oh and i would never call a building "alive" if you average around 1,000 fans for a basketball game... that doesn't seem to liven up the arena at all does it?

For some, I guess as long as it isn't Lamar it's okay. http://www.goutsa.com/fls/13100/pdf_files/athletics/facilities/convo.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=13100
TexasTerror Posted August 21, 2008 Author Report Posted August 21, 2008 That picture does not do it justice... The building just has a "new" feel to it -- something that no other building in the SLC can give you, unless you want to talk about the new scoreboards at different SLC facilities, the new horseflies flying around Burton Coliseum or the new obnoxious fans at SFA.
Guest mffl Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Still, who cares if it has a new feel? I mean if they are looking to move up into FBS and a better conference, why would the play in a facility that only holds 5,000? Shoot if Lamar played in a place like that, it would look mostly full!

I mean if they are looking to move up into FBS and a better conference, why would the play in a facility that only holds 5,000? Shoot if Lamar played in a place like that, it would look mostly full! Because this whole debate started from UTSA's facility getting a 'nod' as being 'sparkling'...well, it is! As far as FBS goes -- a sampling of schools with facilities smaller or equal of that of UTSA's from the lower-end of conferences...showing it can be done C-USA: Tulane, Rice MAC: Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Western Michigan Sun Belt: FAU, Troy and UALR (only holds 5,600 and that's one helluva beautiful facility -- bet UTSA could cram 5,600 in) WAC: San Jose State Keep in mind there are schools in the Big East among others that use smaller facilities for their women than UTSA uses...
Guest mffl Posted August 21, 2008 Report Posted August 21, 2008 Well WBB isn't as near as popular as Men's unless we're in Rocky Top but I get your point Terror.
TexasTerror Posted August 22, 2008 Author Report Posted August 22, 2008 Well WBB isn't as near as popular as Men's unless we're in Rocky Top but I get your point Terror. UConn...the women and the men go back and forth pending on who is the top dog... Then you got a program like Western Kentucky where the women have outdrawn the men historically unless the men are having a good season...bet the same goes for La Tech and perhaps even Old Dominion...
HouTexan Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 Until recently I'd put SFA in that category too.
TexasTerror Posted August 22, 2008 Author Report Posted August 22, 2008 Until recently I'd put SFA in that category too. I'm curious how long they'll keep Riley as the head coach. The Ladyjacks have high expectations on them.
Ruckdad Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 Terror - Where does UALR play these days? I had the fortune of going to a SUn Belt tournament there several years back and the building at that time was a dump. THis was in the late 90s.

I guess that place was too big and having a smaller but nice on-campus arena is probably better.
