8/22/2008 New students and residents of Cardinal Village will join current students, alumni, faculty and staff for a fun-filled “Weekend of Welcome†at Lamar University on Saturday, Aug. 23, and Sunday, Aug. 24.

The weekend is designed to welcome new students to the campus, acquaint them with student organizations and provide move-in assistance while offering them a variety of fun activities in which to participate, said Antoinette Mays, special events assistant for the Office of Alumni Affairs.

Student move-in begins at 9 a.m. and continues until 5 p.m. both days. Current students, representatives from campus organizations, alumni, faculty and staff will be available to assist students moving into the dorms. When students have settled into their dorm rooms or want a break from unpacking, they can explore campus and participate in any of the many activities taking place over the weekend.

On Saturday, students will enjoy the food at the Cardinal Cookout and participate in the fun and games taking place at the Carnival on the Quad. New students can compete against their peer advisors in the PA Reunion Basketball Game. They will finish off the day with free barbecue, live music and door prizes at the Midnight BBQ.

The festivities continue Sunday morning. Students can take a tour of Beaumont and become familiar with local shopping centers or watch a box office hit at the Cardinal Cinema. They can join other students and campus organizations for a fun field day during Cardinal Combat. Finally, the weekend will close with the “Red and White Affair†in the Setzer Student Center Ballroom. Students can get decked out in red and white to participate in the contests and enjoy the scholarship balloon drop.
