DAYTON — The Bridge City cross country squads got off to a tremendous start to the 2008 season Saturday as the Lady Cardinals captured first-place at the Dayton Invitational and the Cardinals claimed second.

The Cardinal boys finished just barely behind team champion Auty.

“being the first meet and all, it was a great team effort,†said Cardinal cross country coach Cody Knight. “I was really extra pleased with how our girls performed.â€

Tim Cude led the Cardinals over the three-mile course, finishing second with a time of 17 minutes and 30 seconds. He was followed by teammates Kirby Shephard (third, 17:50), Sawyer Hogan (12th, 19:01), Armando Chavez (15th, 19:24), Kyle Prosperie (19th, 19:59), Jacob Worthington (30th, 21:44) and Eric Chesson (32nd, 21:54).

“It was a good overall first meet for the guys,†said Knight. “There was some good competition and I know they’ll continue to make giant steps forward as the season moves along.â€

The Lady Cardinals easily outdistanced second-place Liberty to nab their team trophy.

The Lady Cardinals were paced by Mary Nguyen, who was fourth with a 13:36 over the two-mile course. She was followed by teammates Jessica Franklin (sixth, 13:57), Megan Shockley (10th, 14:14), Faith Rowe (14th, 14:38) and Ariel Chesson (15th, 14:43).

“I couldn’t be more prouder of our girls,†said Knight. “They’ve been up at school running all summer long. They all averaged out about 200 miles over the course of the summer. You can tell that they’re really hungry to have a lot of success this season.â€
