Peeveys bring family feel to Bobcats

Gabriel Pruett

The Orange Leader

ORANGEFIELD — Orangefield senior Zach Peevey has always called Coach Morrison simply — Coach Morrison.

Same thing for Coach Theriot, Coach Prause and the rest of the Bobcats’ coaching staff.

This season a coach has had a familiar name to Zach, Coach Peevey.

Zach’s older brother Eric is back in Orangefield to coach the varsity receivers and both siblings are excited about the opportunity.

“The opportunity to coach Zach was a huge incentive on coming home,†Eric said. “I coached him in the seventh and eighth grade. The last two years I have not even been able to watch him play. I missed everything. He is so much more mature now and when I tell him things he just looks at me at times and says ‘I know Coach Peevey.’â€

Zach has enjoyed the time with his brother who graduated from Orangefield High School in 2002.

“I have liked it alot,†Zach said. “If I ever have questions, he is the first one I go to.â€

Zach rushed for 406 yards on 102 carries a year ago and scored two touchdowns.

One of the hardest aspects Zach has had to get used to is calling his brother Coach Peevey instead of well, brother.

“The funniest thing is the other night I took him to the movies and to eat for his birthday and he called me Coach Peevey,†Eric said. “One thing I explained to him and our family is when we are out here at practice, I will coach him like anyone else. Then when we are at home, I don’t bring up football or mistakes I might see him make. He is under enough pressure while at practice and we are just family at home.â€

Zach said seeing his brother at practice makes him work even harder when Eric has his eyes on the running back.

“Calling him Coach Peevey still does not seem right,†Zach said. “I work a little harder when he is around. I know him, he will go and tell Dad.â€

Eric may or may not run and tell the father but he does admit Zach knows he has to be on his toes when the big brother is around.

“I don’t even have to say anything,†Eric said. “I just have to look at him and he knows. He has done a great job so far this year being a senior leader. He has never been a real vocal player. He has always done it by leading by example and he never misses a beat. I tell him to do his job and everyone else will just follow.â€

Zach is now ready to get the season started and improving on the Bobcats’ 3-7 record from a year ago. Orangefield will entertain East Chambers this Friday.

“It feels great to be a senior this year,†Zach said. “We have worked real hard and I think we will have a good year. We have to get off to a better start this year. I’d rather see us start 6-0 this year instead of 0-6 like last year.â€

No matter the record, Zach will never have to look far to see one of his biggest fans. His brother Eric will be right there to keep both eyes on him.
