Lady Bears sweep Lady Titans

Tommy Mann, Jr.

LITTLE CYPRESS — If it would've been a prizefight, it would've been called off in the first round.

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears wasted little time dispatching the Port Arthur Memorial Lady Titans in non-district volleyball action at the Bear Cave Tuesday evening.

The Lady Bears strolled past the Lady Titans 25-6, 25-12, 25-8 to improve to 10-6 on the season.

LC-M is fresh off a 3-3 trip to the Northwest Tournament in the Fort Worth area where they played elite Class 5A and 4A teams. A good tournament to play in considering the Lady Bears crank up District 20-4A action next Tuesday against an always powerful Port Neches-Groves unit. The Lady Bears, who placed third to make the postseason a year ago, went 0-6 in the Northwest Tournament a year ago.

"I feel we're way ahead of where we were at this point last year," said long-time Lady Bear head coach Vicki Castino. "It really gave the kids a chance to gel with district right around the corner."

Castino has enjoyed watching the squad make progress.

"Our weakness going Into the year, I thought, was going to be on offense," Castino said. "We're making great strides there though. I knew we had a chance to be really good on defense and we've been excellent there."

The Lady Bears simply overwhelmed the Lady Titans from the get-go and led Game Three by as much as 13-1.

Junior Christine Sicktich powered the LC-M arsenal, racking up 16 kills. Maci Wilcox contributed eight kills. Ashton LaVergne had four kills while Elissa Tate, Shelby Apperson and Caroline Armstrong all had three each.

The Lady Bears roughed up Memorial with its serving prowess by putting together 14 aces in the match. Carly Gauthier put together 12 points and three aces while Shelby Sanchez provided a nice punch off the bench with 12 points and two aces. Brittany Wiegand had 10 points and a team-high four aces while Alexa Humble added seven points and two aces.

Natasha Youman led the Lady Titans with five kills while Jocelyn Malveaux added three points and two kills.

The Lady Bears will visit Beaumont West Brook Friday for a 6 p.m. varsity start before heading to the Reservation to face PN-G Tuesday.

"PN-G will be a trough place to go to start district but everybody in our district is pretty tough," said Castino. "Volleyball is a game of momentum, so you have to be ready each and every time you take the court."
