The Goose Creek Memorial Patriots scored a football victory this week, and it didn’t even come on the field.

Junior quarterback Cody Larson, a late transfer from Sterling, was ruled eligible to play for the Patriot varsity team, principal Al Richard said Monday.

Larson is expected to start for GCM in Thursday night’s season opener against Pasadena High.

“We’ve played other kids at quarterback, but he’s the best one right now,†Patriot head coach Bret Boyd said.

Sophomore quarterback Price Jacobs had been sharing snaps with Larson in practices and scrimmages leading up to the season opener.

“Price is not as polished yet as he will be,†the coach said. “Cody came by it a little faster, but I think when it’s all said and done, they’ll both be capable.â€

Larson had expected to be a backup quarterback at Sterling this season, but that changed after his father, longtime junior high coach Randy Larson, landed a job on Boyd’s staff at Baytown’s new high school.

Cody Larson decided to follow his father, even if it meant not playing on the varsity this year.

Because the family still lives in the Sterling attendance zone, the quarterback was ineligible to play varsity sports for the Patriots this year without a series of waivers.

First, Larson needed a residency waiver from the state University Interscholastic League, which came last week. Similar waivers were required from the Goose Creek school district and the District 19-4A executive committee.

Those were obtained after Sterling coach Herb Minyard signed off on a previous athletic participation form, saying that Larson had not been illegally recruited to transfer.

Larson’s younger sister, Katie, a ninth-grader, was also granted waivers to move to Goose Creek Memorial. The basketball player is questionable for playing this school year because of a recent knee injury.
