GOT HEART? WE DO Posted August 28, 2008 Report Posted August 28, 2008 No Doubts About Gilmer By Matthew Stepp DFW Writer Posted Aug 29, 2008 Darian Godfrey and Jeremy Jackson proved to be a lethal combination as Gilmer notched their 25th straight regular season win as they blew past Jasper 56-28 at Trinity Mother-Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler. TYLER- In a rematch of the 2004 Class 3A State Championship Game, the Gilmer Buckeyes (1-0) made sure the outcome was the same as they demolished the Jasper Bulldogs (0-1) 56-28 at Trinity Mother-Frances Rose Stadium on Thursday night. In the 2004 meeting, Gilmer jumped out to a big lead on Jasper but had to hold on for dear life in a 49-47 thriller. This time around Gilmer jumped out to the big lead and they kept a minimum of a 14 point margin all night. Gilmer’s offense pounded out nearly 300 yards rushing and QB Darian Godfrey was sensational in his new role of unquestioned leader of the Gilmer offense as he threw for 80 yards and a touchdown and ran for 126 yards and 2 touchdowns, while RB Jeremy Jackson had four touchdowns. Gilmer started off quickly as after forcing a Jasper punt the Buckeyes marched inside the Jasper five yard line but Godfrey was hit lunging for the end zone was caught in a “Bronson Sandwhich†as Ryan Bronson forced the fumble and A.J. Bronson recovered in the end zone to squelch the Gilmer chance. The Buckeyes would force a turnover of their own as Jasper QB Dominique Bailey was picked off by Gilmer DB J.T. Beecham who returned it to the Jasper 21. On the next play Gilmer would score as Jeremy Jackson caught a screen pass from Godfrey and took it 21 yards to paydirt to give Gilmer a 7-0 lead as Adan Olivares’ PAT was good. Jasper would give Gilmer another short field as Bailey was picked off again this time by LB Mikey Wilson to give GHS the ball at the Jasper 32. Gilmer would respond as on their first play Coach Traylor pulled out some razzle dazzle as Godfrey threw a backwards pass to Braylon Webb who hit a wide open J.T. Beecham for the score and Gilmer quickly built a 14-0 in the first quarter. Gilmer would extend the lead early in the second quarter to 21-0 as Godfrey would score on a two yard run. The Jasper offense showed signs of life as after hitting a long pass from Bailey to Kwame Spikes, the Bulldogs finished the march as sophomore RB Ben Armstrong scored from a yard out and Ernest Medrano’s PAT was true and Gilmer’s lead was cut to 21-7. Gilmer had a quick answer as Tristan Holt returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards to the Jasper six. Two plays later Zach Jones scored on a five yard run to make it 28-7 and that’s where things would remain at the half. If there was any doubt that Gilmer was in complete control of the game it ended to start the second half as the Buckeyes went on an impressive nine play drive which ended in a one yard touchdown plunge for Jackson to make it 35-7 Gilmer. Jasper had a quick answer as after Bailey hooked up for a long completion to Darren Beavers, he would score on an 11 yard run to cut the deficit to 35-14. After forcing a Gilmer three and out it appeared Jasper might get back in the game as they moved inside the Gilmer 30, but Gilmer sophomore LB Gus Osborne ended the threat with a sack of Bailey on 4th and 7. That play ended all Jasper hope as four plays later Jackson scored his third touchdown of the day from 53 yards out and Gilmer extended the lead to 42-14. Jasper had some fight still left as at the end of the third Armstrong scored on a four yard run making it 42-21. The entire fourth quarter was basically garbage time as Jackson and Godfrey both added touchdown runs for Gilmer and Jasper backup QB Cameron Stubblefield hooked up with Ryan Bronson for a 17 yard touchdown pass for the final margin of 56-28.
