One high school football game cancelled by Gustav might be back on

Jasper's Thomas Brooks said his high school football team's game against Kirbyville might be back on, but for Saturday.

The game, originally set for Friday, had been cancelled by school superintendents when Hurricane Gustav threatened the region.

With the storm gone, Brooks said superintendents have reconsidered.

"Our super is trying to get in touch with theirs and (Kirbyville coach Jack) Alvarez," Brooks said. "If both want to do it, we're going to play Saturday. It's just going to help all of us by playing."

The matchup, if played, would be among many appealing games Saturday. Kirbyville is ranked sixth in the latest Class 2A state poll. Also Saturday is the second leg of the Beaumont Bowl, between West Brook and Central, set for 7 p.m. at Durley Stadium.

That game was moved from Friday to Saturday after Gustav caused evacuations that closed schools until Thursday.

Other games moved from Friday to Saturday include: Diboll at Silsbee, time TBA; Chester at Legacy, noon; Kelly at Hitchcock, 6 p.m.; Kountze at Bridge City, 6 p.m.; Buna at Orangefield, 6:30 p.m.; Barbers Hill at Lumberton, 7 p.m.; Port Neches-Groves at Crosby, 7 p.m.; and Hardin-Jefferson at Woodville, 7:30 p.m.

Scheduled for Saturday all along is a game with Ozen and Memorial, set for 7 p.m. at Zaharias Stadium.

Games still on for Friday are: Houston St. Thomas at Vidor, 7 p.m.; Anahuac at Danbury, 7:30 p.m.; Crockett at Corrigan-Camden, 7:30 p.m.; East Chambers vs. Newton, 7:30 p.m., site TBA; Hull-Daisetta at Tenaha, 7:30 p.m.

Still cancelled is a game between Little Cypress-Mauriceville and West Orange-Stark.
