Guest mffl Posted September 8, 2008 Report Posted September 8, 2008 What happens when a 6-foot-8 unknown big-man suits up for their first ever summer with the Dallas Mustangs? Scholarship offers start rolling in. Corey Garrett from Center, Texas turned heads with his raw athletic ability in the paint. This past weekend, the small town athlete decided to pull the plug on anymore visits and offers. "I committed to be a Lumberjack," said Garrett. "Going to SFA will give me a chance to win at all times. It's the place for me." Only thirty minutes from Center, Garrett says that this is a great opportunity. "Being so close to home will allow my dad, who is my biggest critic to come see me play in person instead of listen to the game on the radio." On his visit, Garrett was very impressed with so many aspects of SFA. "I meet with the Dean of Political Science and the program seems to be a great education. Also the student center and the rec center are top of the line. They are doing so many things on campus to improve things and it is a fun place to be." Garrett continues. "As for the athletic facilities, they are the best. The locker room, the area are unbelievable." Garrett says that a big part of his decision came down to relationships. "I got to know the coaches through phone conversations and meeting them was great. Once I meet the players, everything just clicked, like I knew immediately this is where I need to be. I really trust (head) coach (Danny) Kaspar and I believe what he tells me. He says that he will push me hard everyday in practice, and I have seen them practice and it's no joke. Coach Kaspar puts them through some rigorous drills. He is very real with the players and is to the point." This was Garrett's first and only visit and adds that he had offers and interest from other programs. "Lamar was going to come for a house visit, but I will have to cancel that now. I had offers from North Texas, Lamar, Sam Houston State, Centenary, Houston Baptist, Texas State, and Prairie View A&M. I also had interest from, SMU, Texas Tech, Bradley and Tulane." Texas Hoops Analysis:COREY is a raw athlete who excels in a free flowing game in which he can use his speed and overall athleticism to make plays. He is a very good leaper for his size, has long arms, challenges shots in the paint and plays with energy. He is raw on the offensive end, finishes right around the goal and gets easy putbacks on the offensive boards. He is still learning the game and could really develop after as he takes a step up to tougher competition at the next level.

All of these schools offered this guy a scholarship even though he only visited the SFA campus? Do schools normally offer scholarships without first having the kids take an official visit? Just curious about this.
cardinalcc Posted September 8, 2008 Report Posted September 8, 2008 Basketball could be completely different from Cross Country and Track, but when I was deciding on where to run I talked to several coaches on the phone before I was going to visit their school. They can give you a pretty good idea of what kind of scholarship money they are going to be able to give you. Then you can set up official and unofficial visits to the schools and meet with the coaches and see campus and stuff like that

Just curious about this. With basketball, along with football too or whatever school, coaches can offer you a scholarship whenever they feel like it. Now if you are a player who isn't as good or maybe whose out of state, some coaches want you to take a visit before they extend an offer to see how much genuine interest you have in the school. This guy had an in-home visit with Lamar planned, along with an offer. Some players may commit to a school but still take their visits. This kid says he is going to shut his recruiting down so best of luck to him.
Guest abovetherim Posted September 8, 2008 Report Posted September 8, 2008 SFA looks like they landed a good one.
