Guest Jags Posted September 9, 2008 Report Posted September 9, 2008 Turnovers main factor in Dayton’s 42-21 loss By Jerry Michalsky Contributor Published September 6, 2008 FRIENDSWOOD – Dayton vs. Friendswood was billed as the Greater Houston area game of the week and, with each team owning one of the state’s top quarterbacks, it was expected to be high scoring and well executed. High scoring, yes. But it was anything but a cleanly played game as the Mustangs took advantage of five second-half turnovers from Dayton to roll to a 42-21 win over the Broncos at Harry Winston Stadium. Heating up in the second half, Mustang quarterback Jacob Karam passed for 391 yards and four touchdowns. Friendswood (1-0) turned it over four times in the first half alone, but Dayton could only capitalize once. With the Mustangs leading 14-7 at the half, it was Cameron LaCour returning the opening kickoff of the second half 82 yards for a Dayton score to cut the lead to one point. Cody Green failed on the PAT kick to keep the Broncos behind 14-13. That is when things went downhill for Dayton (1-1). The Mustangs quickly matched the score as Karam hit Cody Bergeson from eight yards out with 9:39 still left in the quarter. Dayton quarterback Green would then be intercepted by the Mustangs’ Andrew Cole, who returned it 28 yards to the Bronco 15-yard line. On the next play it was Al White scoring up the middle to up the lead to 28-13 with 3:27 left in the third quarter. Green and the Broncos went three and out on their next series as Green was sacked on third down. Friendswood would score again just 30 seconds into the final quarter as offensive lineman Colton Yuchnewicz scored from three yards out. After Dayton moved down to the Mustang 22-yard line, down 35-13 and needing a score, it was Chris O’Bryan stepping in front of a Green pass to halt the drive. Lightning would strike quickly for Karam and company two plays later as Andre Gautreaux was under the fourth touchdown pass from Karam on the night, this one from 74-yards out to give Friendswood a 42-13 lead. The Broncos would finally take advantage of a Mustang turnover late in the game as N.L. Hines picked up a fumble and returned it 18 yards for a score. Early on it was Dayton lighting up the scoreboard first as Green hit A.J. Dugat on a 71-yard pass play down to the Mustang 1-yard line. Green scored on the next play to make it 7-0. Xavier Edwards set up the score with a fumble recovery. The Mustangs came back late in the first score to tie things up as Karam hit Gautreaux from 42 yards out. Friendswood took its first lead of the game midway though the second quarter as Karam hit Austin Fitzpatrick from 38 yards out. The Broncos will have a bye next week before opening up district play on Sept. 19 at home against Kingwood Park.
