Galveston Football Story

GALVESTON — Despite not being allowed to return to Galveston Island yet, the Ball High School varsity football team is still making plans to continue its season.

After a District 24-5A Executive Committee meeting Friday, Ball High head football coach Ron Holmes said a plan has been put in place for the district to continue playing this season with the Tornadoes on the schedule.

“We don’t have a site to practice or to play yet, but all of those things are being worked out,†Holmes said. “We are confident that we will be ready to play in two weeks.â€

District play in 24-5A was scheduled to begin Thursday, with Ball High taking on Clear Lake at Veterans Memorial Stadium. That game was been canceled.

Other district games set to be played next week — Alvin at Dickinson, Clear Springs at Brazoswood and Clear Brook vs. Clear Creek — will be played next week, but will not count in the district standings. Holmes said he is currently working on a location to play their scheduled home game against Clear Creek on Oct. 3.

Holmes said his staff, parents and players will meet in La Marque on Monday night to discuss the details regarding Ball High’s season.

“We have a lot of things to work out, like where we are going to practice and what we will use for transportation,†Holmes said. “But we are planning to play against Clear Creek.â€

District 24-4A Meeting Set

The District 24-4A Executive Committee will meet at 10 a.m. Monday in Friendswood to determine make-up dates and possible realignment of football and volleyball schedules.

Four district varsity football games are scheduled for Sept. 26: Texas City at Friendswood, La Marque at Angleton, Santa Fe at Brazosport and Dawson at Manvel.

Texas City Accepting Students

Any homeless student athletes staying in Texas City Independent School District limits are eligible to play sports.

Any high school student athletes will have to fill out University Interscholastic League paperwork and are subject to a 15-day waiting period before they are able to play in a contest. No paperwork or waiting period is need for middle school student athletes.
