KFDM COOP Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 Lady Bears aid BC; await 20-4A schedule Van Wade The Orange Leader While the Little Cypress-Mauriceville volleyball team is pondering about their upcoming District 20-4A volleyball schedule, the Lady Bears were busy in Bridge City this past weekend in Bridge City, helping out the Ike-ravaged community with sweat and food. The Lady Bears were aiding Bridge City residents by cleaning out their homes and supplying them with food and water. “I’m so proud of our kids and what they accomplished in Bridge City,†said long-time Lady Bear head coach Vicki Castino. “A lot of those kids on the Bridge City team is like an extended family for a lot of our girls. Many of our kids were fortunate enough to not have a lot of damage. I’m so happy people are rallying together to help the Bridge City and West Orange communities.†The Lady Bears were busy from early morning to late in the evening. “They did so well, helping people clean out their homes and they were able to move some debris out,†said Castino. “The kids brought in much-needed supplies and were going door-to-door passing out water and food. It’s such a tough situation for so many, just to put a smile on their faces and get hugs from them is so rewarding because they’re going through so much. That says a lot about Southeast Texans. We all rally behind one another.†Now the Lady Bears’ focus has shifted to 20-4A play. LC-M, which beat Port Neches-Groves to open 20-4A play way back when, has lost four matches due to Ike along with PN-G while the rest of the district lost five matches. “We’re having a district meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) to figure out a system,†Castino said. “We’ll probably be playing three matches a week to catch up if the UIL allows that.†The Lady Bears will have a stern non-district test this Friday when they play host to District 21-3A juggernaut Silsbee. The freshmen will start at 4:30 p.m. followed by the junior varsity and varsity. “Silsbee is a great test for our girls to get them back in the swing of things,†Castino said. ‘We got back to practice Monday and that helped the kids get their minds off things. Things will get back even more normal with school starting Thursday.â€
