Possible Name Change for LU?

I admit I like SE Texas State better than Lamar' date=' Duke doesnt need to change their name when every basketball game they have is on national TV so everyone knows their name and where they are, we dont have that here.[/quote']

Duke didn't always have it and they didn't change the name to get it. When we get to Duke level, fans will know where LU is.

When I lived in Vegas, ppl knew where LU was located and it's history. LU games were in the stat search of the papers and on the betting boards at casino's. I'm not sure, but I think LU lost that privilage when it left the Sunbelt. Another bone-head move. I one time put on a Lamar University red and white sweater at the Luxor, ppl approached me mentioning LU and one guy said he was a former student.

NO, I dont like Southeast Texas st.

I love Vegas and would move there if I could, but I dont think that Vegas is a good sampling of people only from the standpoint that with the casinos and sportsbooks there, and bettors and the amounts that they lay down of course they know what Lamar is, where Lamar is thats their job or if nothing else a passionate hobby.

UNLV I suspect, that you and I are in fact a lot alike in that either of us can look at a stat page, or the week's football/basketball betting lines, and we know where schools are, what conference they are in, who they play etc, people like all of us on this board are passionate about sports we may have differing opinions on topics, but we agree we're all fans.

As Lamar we look at out basketball schedule and see St. Gregory's on Nov. 25, I have no clue in hell where St. Gregorys is, never heard of them, but by the same token there are people at BYU who look at their schedule and say "Who is Lamar?, never heard of 'em, where are they from?"

I'm not saying I'm in favor of a name change, only that if they decide to change it I like SE Texas State better than the other choices people have mentioned.

1. University of Texas, reply Austin, Texas

2. Baylor, reply in Texas dont remember what city

3. TCU, reply Fort Worth

4. SMU , reply Dallas

5. Tulane, reply I don't know

6. Louisville, reply I dont kow

8. BYU, reply I don't know

9. Creighton, reply I don't know

10. Drake, reply I don't know

11. Air Force , reply I don't know

12. Army, reply I don't know

13. Navy, reply I don't know

14. Stanford, reply I don't know

15. Wagner, reply I don't know

16. Grambling, reply I don't know

17. Pairie View, reply I don't know

18. Texas Southern, reply I don't know

19. Louisiana Tech, reply in Louisiana, don't know what city

20. Lamar University, reply Beaumont, Texas

I don't think changing the name due to casual sports fans not knowing the location of a school is not a great idea. If so there are several here on this list that might need to consider a name change as well.

my father, Bert Flickinger, was a student at Lamar Tech when the name change to Lamar U. was accepted. He told me that he submitted the name "Lamar State Local University of Texas" as he wanted to see "L-SLUT" on football helmets.

Surprisingly, the regents frowned.

I don't like SE Texas state or whatever due the negative "directional" university stigma.

it makes more sense if one must change it to go with texas state university-beaumont than southeast texas state university in beaumont, texas. however, i think lamar has been around long enough that is known as it is. if this is an image change, what kind of other changes might be more appropriate, i.e. mascot, mascot name, community awareness, slogans, etc.

just my humble opinion. th-th-th-that's all folks.

A future name change for Lamar University and the other three Lamar-named schools always is a possibility. I've heard some of that talk, and the "Texas State University-Beaumont" name is the most often discussed rumor. However, schools like Sam Houston, which has a long and storied history, would resist such a change.

Just a note to WO795: Lamar State College-Port Arthur and Lamar State College-Orange did not "break away" from Lamar University. They were independent schools which just happened to belong for a period of time to the LU System. When the system was abolished, they were added to the Texas State University System, where they remain as independent schools.

Lamar State College-PA was founded in 1909 as Port Arthur College, long before there was any thought of Lamar University.
