Guest mffl Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 Curtis Eatmon Shooting guard Glendora (CA) Citrus C.C. Ht: 6-foot-4 Wt: 185 lbs Class: 2009 (Junior College) Eatmon is a transfer from the University of Utah. He was a top 5 guard on the west coast coming out in 2006, however he was listed as a PG then and now he's at SG.
Guest abovetherim Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 mffl, if you get a chance please list all the guys you know Lamar is recruiting. BTW, this cat sounds like a stud. Didn't one of our assistants coach at Utah? There could be a connection to put Lamar in a great position to land this guy.
Guest coachacola Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 Thanks for all the basketball recruiting info mffl. You really know how to find this stuff. Like abovetherim said, a list of all the guys you know Lamar is recruiting would be great. We keep hearing about all these guards, how about some big guys?
BLUEDOVE3 Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 I hate to burst yall bubble but LU has a history of recruiting players who are overrated. When LU did get a legit stud a few seasons ago, it was only because nobody else would touch the guy. And LU is still paying for that mistake. But it's good you guys still back your school the way you do.
Guest abovetherim Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 Please look at the current roster. I see no players overrated. BTW, this guy (Curtis Eatmon) started at Utah as a freshman. He is probably pretty good.
BLUEDOVE3 Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 Please look at the current roster. I see no players overrated. BTW, this guy (Curtis Eatmon) started at Utah as a freshman. He is probably pretty good. Actually I haven't looked at the current roster. There is no need because I've looked at it for the past 20 years and the same results. The recruiting period brings about overrated bios on most of these players. If they were really good, they would have signed at a major D-1 school. I wonder if this kid lost his scholarship at Utah?
BLUEDOVE3 Posted September 29, 2008 Report Posted September 29, 2008 Hmm! 5'9" point guard Nic Wise from Kingwood was ranked higher than this kid the year they came out and little Nic signed with a major D-1 program.
Guest abovetherim Posted September 29, 2008 Report Posted September 29, 2008 Great for Nic, has he made All-Conference yet?

I am a little confused with your posts, BLUEDOVE. Are you implying that folks on this board believe Lamar is on an even playing field with the major D-I schools across this country and should be getting major D-I recruits? Or is it that you think Lamar fans try to make mountains out of molehills with the recruits they get?
BLUEDOVE3 Posted September 29, 2008 Report Posted September 29, 2008 Great for Nic, has he made All-Conference yet? Well I haven't heard that he lost his scholarship either!

LUFAN Posted September 29, 2008 Report Posted September 29, 2008 Dove Fly away, you always talk noise about LU... They do have some decent recruits... but as a Low Major program we have to take what we can get. Sometimes those risks do not pan out IE James Davis.... sometimes they do.. We may not be the experts on recruiting, but most of the time the experts agree that LU has the best recruiting classes in the SLC and sometimes some of the top in the nation. You are such a pessimist I wonder how you could have any friends.... or even how you can like anything about yourself...

Let it be known that The Dove wishes a 2009 championship in the SLC for the LU Cards. I just think the LU PR guys do a good job of selling their recruits to the LU fans. At least these guys will help LU with their graduation rate for athletes.

I mean if he doesn't win with guys that are suppose to be all-world then the reason for losing falls on the head coach's shoulders. Did Coach Roc hype some players as an assistant? Maybe, but I promise you he is smart enough to know if he hypes his players as the head coach and they don't produce he may be looking for a new job in a couple of years. Especially with the coaching staff he has put together. Forgive me, you probably think the coaching staff is hyped by the PR department? Where exactly is the PR department in the Montagne Center? I'd like to stop by and chat with those guys.

I'd like to stop by and chat with those guys. Dang Above, you ask some good questions. So what part of the LU sports dept. do you work Anyway, all good coaches justify why a certain player was signed and there is no problem with this method. But the LU Sports Info Dept. has a history of building these players up and some of us on this forum use the term "stud" to describe their play. LU history tells me not to buy into that type of hype. The kid (stud)who signed with Utah in 2006. I did some checking on him. One ranking service has him #300. Little bitty Nic Wise (5'9") from Kingwood High was in the top 200, if not the top 150. But this stud did attend some major camps and performed well in front of some coaches. Plus the deciding factor is that this kid seems to have a good academic head. Rock will say after a losing season that at least the kids are graduating. If Rock stays at LU long enough, this will be his justification that the program is heading in the right direction. Oh yeah, they use to be in room 137 back in the day.
Guest abovetherim Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 So, I need to talk with the sports information guys? Well, where do they get there information? Texas Hoops, Rivals, scout. hoopmasters, jucojunction and etc. No, they walk down the hall and talk to the coaches. Therefore, it isn't the SI department but the coaches who give the stats and accolades of the players to the SID and they put the bios together. I promise the SI department isn't in the business of "building these players up". Now about the player in question Curtis Eatmon, I too did some checking on him and 2 recruiting websites had him as a Top 100 recruit with one ranking him at #88. I'll post the information so you don't think I'm making it up.

badndn Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 Since Roc got back on campus he has recruited & signed a handfull of hyped players and had success with most. A. Daniels was one of the best scorers ever at Lamar. T. Fairley was a double/double guy. L. Sanders was every bit as good as the hype. J. Davis was not a bust due to his play, but the attitude so the hype was legit. K. Dawkins is maybe the best guard we have had since the Tubbs era. J. Nabors is a SLC POY candidate (save for the injury). J. Brown has had his moments so far, but it looks like we will find out for sure this year with Nabors out! C. Todd did exactly what he was hyped up to do at LU, quality minutes as a 6th man. I think that the problem is that the hyped players are JUCO guys that are only here for a short period. While I love the players, I think the lack of signing high ranking HS "Studs" has been the biggest reason for the lack of an NCAA birth. Continuity over four years does stand for something at the low major level.
Guest coachacola Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 I think the great success Tubbs and Foster had 20 to 30 years ago still affect how we view the recruiting classes today. It only takes 2 or 3 great players to propel a team to the NCAAs and maybe win a game or two. There's probably a lot of old-school fans like myself waiting for that to happen again so we get carried away with they hype. I admit it, but I don't care. I enjoy the expectations of a great season, even though the season usually ends in disappointment. With Lamar's first football recruiting class coming soon, I look forward to talking about the over-hyped players that Woodard brings in!!

Utah let the kid go because he was not good enough to play at that level. The #300 ranking from Hoops Scoop was fair. They gave his scholarship to a walk-on player................ Also, there was a kid (pg?sg?) from the Clear Lake area that LU supposely was going to sign. LU hyped this kid up a few months ago. This kid was no good too. My point is this: I'm not saying these kids can't ball, but LU is very good hyping these kids up and most of it is just hype.
BLUEDOVE3 Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 I think the great success Tubbs and Foster had 20 to 30 years ago still affect how we view the recruiting classes today. Tubbs and Foster were blessed in a time when grades didn't matter as much, and less competition from video games. Plus, every kid with a serious game wants to play on the big stage. The kid from HJ (two seasons ago) is a prime example. Too many kids get the hype but don't realize their skills (mental & physical)don't transfer into big time D-1 players.
