KFDM COOP Posted September 27, 2008 Report Posted September 27, 2008 Eagles start off district with win By Robert Chambliss Correspondent Published September 27, 2008 MONT BELVIEU — The Barbers Hill Eagles volleyball team soared high over the Dayton Broncos in Friday night’s hurricane-delayed district opener. Leading the team to its 25-13, 25-17, 25-11 victory was senior Dyana Cannon with her 10 kills, three blocks, and five aces. “I think our entire team played well,†Cannon said. “We all came out strong and played 110 percent. I’m proud of my team, and I am glad that we came out here and grabbed this first district victory.†Also helping the team to victory were Taylor Barnett and Kirsten Terry. Barnett had an impressive 21 serve attempts and 16 points won on serve, while Terry had eight kills and two blocks. The Eagles jumped out early on the Broncos in set one, with an impressive four aces in a row to cap off the first set victory. In set two the Broncos fought back with Deanna Tousant three kills and two blocks; however, the Eagles were just too much for the Broncos to overcome. In the third and final set, the Eagles coasted their way to victory with 14 kills and four blocks. It had been two weeks since they had last played a game because of Hurricane Ike, but coach John Leonard seemed very positive with how well his team played. “We had good practices all week, and I really felt that our team was ready to play,†he said. And ready to play is exactly what the Eagles were. “We went out and took care of our business tonight,†he said. “We took care of the ball really well, we didn’t make a lot of silly mistakes, and we kept our shots in play forcing the Broncos to make some errors and providing opportunities for us to make easy kills.†When questioned about winning the district coach Leonard just said, “If we play like we did tonight, then I have no doubt that we could play with the best of them.†The Eagles look to make it 2-0 in district today when they take on Galena Park at 4 p.m. at Barbers Hill in the high school competition gym.
