*HF vs. Deweyville Updates/21-14 HF Wins In Overtime!*

Deweyville seems pretty good this year compared to the past few years...H.F. just having rough game or what?

Both teams showed rust early from the layoff, however, it was a very physical game, HF is huge, lots of size on both sides of the ball, and congrats to the Longhorns on the victory tonight, exciting game to watch, although Deweyville could not capitalize on the opportunities they had, they never quit and kept fighting till the end, I think the Pirates will be fine, and with District starting next week, the Pirates should be fighting for a playoff spot.

Overtime thriller

H-F escapes Deweyville with 21-14 win in OT

Van Wade

The Orange Leader

DEWEYVILLE — The Deweyville Pirates held their own against Class 3A Hamshire-Fannett in their first home game of the season Saturday night at Pirate Stadium.

The Pirates rallied from a 14-0 deficit to force the game into overtime. However, H-F quarterback Jake Minaldi connected with receiver Jeremy Pinder on a 10-yard scoring strike in overtime as the Longhorns held off the Pirates for a 21-14 victory.

The Pirates (2-1) managed a first-and-10 at the H-F 10 in overtime but the Longhorns (2-1) snuffed out Deweyville fullback Keeton Addison at the 3 on fourth-and-5 to hold on for the victory.

The Longhorns outgained the Pirates 291-167 but the Pirates held H-F to just 95 total yards after halftime.

“I can’t fault the kids’ effort at all tonight,†said first-year Pirate head coach Russell McDaniel. “Our defense played huge there in the second half. Offensively, we bounced back from a tough first half and made some plays. We played really well against a 3A club tonight but you still want to come out with the victory and we didn’t.â€

Deweyville missed several golden opportunities to turn the game in their favor but couldn’t take advantage of five H-F turnovers.

“If we could’ve cashed a couple of those in, it might have been a different game,†said McDaniel. “Give Hamshire’s defense some credit, they played an excellent game.â€

Longhorn tailback Chris Bell zipped for 153 tough yards on 28 carries. Minaldi carried 16 times for 78 yards.

Running back Zane Kachtik led the Pirate offense with 76 yards on 21 carries.

After a sluggish first quarter, the Longhorns put together a seven-play, 59-yard scoring drive to start the second period.

Bell carried the load on the march, carrying four times for 42 yards. He put the Longhorns up 7-0 when he took the hand-off and went off right tackle and then cut back across the middle for a 25-yard touchdown jaunt. Kicker Travis’ Briggs’ extra-point was good as â€-F led 7-0 with 9:18 left in the half.

Holding the Pirates to just 56 yards and two first downs in the first 24 minutes, the Longhorns got the ball at the Pirate 35 with 0:49 left in the half.

Minaldi was able to break loose for a 17-yard quarterback draw that went to the Pirate 18. Two plays later Minaldi connected with Pinder on a 18-yard touchdown strike in the right corner of the end zone to make it 14-0 with 0:27 left.

H-F had 196 yards in the first half with Bell roaming for 109 yards on 16 carries while Minaldi carried eight times for 61 yards.

Kachtik had 40 yards on 10 carries in the half.

On the first series of the game Pirate quarterback Destin Lairsey was picked off by H-F linebacker Michael Sinclair at the Pirate 37. H-F failed to capitalize as Deweyville defensive back Jacob Burris picked off a Minaldi pass at the Pirate 22 three plays later.

Pirate defensive back Seth Williams intercepted a Minaldi pass at the H-F 41 with 1:09 left in the first period but the Longhorn defense stiffened, allowing the Pirates just one yard in four plays.

The Pirates pounced on a H-F miscue to put their first points on the board in the third quarter.

Pirate Bryce Belanger fell on a muffed punt by the H-F return man at the Longhorn 43 with 8:26 left in the third. On the very next play from scrimmage, Lairsey handed the ball to Addison, who pitched it back to him and Lairsey found a streaking wide receiver in Eric Avila, who hauled in a 43-yard touchdown bomb across the middle. The Pirates’ point-after kick failed as they trailed 14-6 with 8:08 left in the third.

Pirate Channing O’Bannion plopped on a Bell fumble at the H-F 41 on the next series but the Longhorns forced the Pirates into a three-and-out.

The Pirate defense rose to the occasion and gave the offense nice field position at the H-F 43 with 0:57 left in the third.

Lairsey was the key cog in the game-tying scoring drive.

He picked up a big first down run and saw 15 yards added to it after a personal foul on H-F. He then carried for 9 yards down to the 8 and capped it off with a hard-nosed 8-yard touchdown scamper up the middle. Lairsey came up big again when he found receiver Joe Dooley on the two-point conversion pass to make it a 14-14 game with 11:55 remaining.

The Pirates will open District 23-2A play this Friday when they welcome East Chambers to Pirate Stadium.

HF has a lot of work to do if they want to compete in district.  They are very rusty!  Good thing we didn't play Jasper.   ;)

I am glad someone on here at least has some understanding that HF practiced two days in the last 3 weeks. This after losing their two best players to injuries. That could have had something to do with the "rust." I believe it is way to soon to be writing off the Horns. They will be fine if they continue to work hard. Now that I think about it there last win against Liberty cam on two days practice as well. This week it's LaGrange on another short week, tough for any team.

First I would like to thank Deweyville for inviting us to come play at their place, talk about a splendid

facility and great fans. Yes HF looked really rusty but hey you have to give the Pirates credit they

played a great game. I was impressed with their size, speed & conditioning as most of their guys go both

ways with very little Subs they did not look gassed. Congrats to both teams and GoodLuck this week.
