Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison is sending some pork money Lamar's way:

Lamar University will receive $3 million for advanced fuel cell research as a part of the Fiscal Year 2009 Consolidated Security, Disaster Assistance and Continuing Appropriations Bill, according to a release from Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's office.

Funding for the project will be used by Lamar to continue the Advanced Fuel Cell Research Program to study efficient and clean energy sources for the Army.

A start. Lamar suppose to become a $80 million a year  Tier 1 research university in the coming decade.

That would be great but highly doubtful.  Where did you hear that from and where would the money come from?  That would put them at UH's level.  But Lamar should soon be classified as a Doctoral university instead of a Comprehensive university based on the definition given by Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board:

Doctoral universities offer a wide range of excellent baccalaureate and master’s

programs and are committed to graduate education through the doctorate in targeted areas

of excellence and/or regional need. The institutions each award at least 10 doctoral degrees

per year, offer at least 5 doctoral programs, and/or enroll 150 doctoral students. They

generally have research expenditures of at least $2 million per year.

What? you think I need to impress you by making stuff up. It was reported in the news a while ago. Lamar to become $80 milliion

research university. In comparison, UT is a $300 million.

Then I learned Texas is lagging in public Tier 1 schools, so the plan is for Texas to develope 2-3 schools for Tier 1.

$80 million + Texas plan = Lamar as one of those schools...  my guess Lamar was picked because Lamar is named after Texas Father of education.

I wasn't implying anything.  I was just asking where you heard that news from.  I also read about Texas wanting to develop another Tier 1 university, but the schools in the running for this are UH and Texas Tech (among others), who already have $80 million plus research budgets.  I just can't see Lamar increasing it's $3 million or so research budget to $80 million in a short period of time.

First, LU research budget is not $3 million. Second, its 2-3 schools Texas is wanting for Tier 1. I do remember UH mentioned.

Third, if UH and Tech was already $80 million then wouldn't they already be tier 1. Fourth, this was reported in the news and I posted it...maybe on that other site.

This is Dr Simmons words, not mine.
