Bears, Indians set to open 20-4A play

Gabriel Pruett

The Orange Leader

LITTLE CYPRESS — Little Cypress-Mauriceville Coach Todd Moody called it unfortunate the Battlin’ Bears have only played one game up to this point in the season.

The Bears (0-1) will play game No. 2 at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Battlin’ Bear Stadium when the Port Neches-Groves Indians (2-0) come to town.

“It is great to get back to a little normalcy,†Moody said on Monday. “Our kids are excited to continue and we hope there are no more hurricanes this year.â€

LC-M’s lone game was in Week 1 against the West Orange-Stark Mustangs in a 48-7 loss.

Since then the Bears have had to deal with evacuations and Hurricane Ike clean up like the rest of Southeast Texas.

Moody reported all the players are back within the Bears’ football program and are excited to face off against the Indians.

The Bears picked up 111 yards of offense against the Mustangs with 55 on the ground and 56 in the air.

LC-M gave up 365 yards against WO-S with 173 rushing and 192 passing.

The Indians are expected to stick to their powerful rushing attack which picked up 215 yards against Barbers Hill and another 238 against Crosby.

PN-G has picked up huge contributions from two defensive ends.

Jarin Spikes had a late interception against the Cougars while Ryan McLin blocked an extra point to hold off Crosby.

“PN-G is a good football team,†Moody said. “They run the ball well and are a well-coached football team.â€

One thing is for certain the atmosphere would be great for football as all other area classifications have the night off.

Throw in the fact its the Bears first home game and the crowds PN-G usually bring to the stadium, Moody is expecting excitement.

“It will be a great night of high school football,†Moody said. “It will probably be therapeutic for everyone involved. It is very unfortunate for everything that has happened. I always tell our players it is more important how you react to a situation more than what has actually happened.â€
