Sterling wants to leave turnovers in the past

There’s nothing like turnovers to harsh your mellow.

And now that the Sterling Rangers have seen the high of back-to-back wins to start the season and the low of last week’s 41-27 loss to Katy Taylor, the know which they prefer.

“Win,†Ranger coach Herb Minyard said when asked about his team’s game plan for tonight’s 7:30 p.m. game at New Caney’s Don Ford Stadium.

Now 2-1 for the season, Sterling’s football team takes on 1-2 New Caney, a newly minted Class 5A team, in its final non-district game.

“This is our last opportunity to play before we all start district, and that’s when it really counts,†Minyard said.

“It’s also our first road game. And we’re ready to get back on the other side of the win-loss column.â€

Keagan Kogut, the senior quarterback who sparked the Rangers to pre-hurricane wins over La Porte and South Houston, threw a pair of interceptions and coughed up two fumbles last week to make Katy Taylor’s job easy.

The Ranger defense helped by failing to line up correctly on two plays that turned into a touchdown pass and a long running play.

“We just beat ourselves,†Minyard said. “You can’t turn the ball over, period, but you especially can’t turn it over against a good team.

“But all that can be corrected. And if you throw the ball around as much as we do, you’re going to get a few picked off.â€

New Caney scored an opening 10-0 win over Spring Woods, then lost 31-6 to Magnolia before Hurricane Ike before losing 34-0 to Cleveland last week.

The Eagles have scored only two touchdowns so far this season.

Chad Jackson leads New Caney’s offense with 130 yards rushing and teammates Christian Perez and Joey Sullivan have each scored rushing touchdowns.

Kogut has eight touchdown passes and 625 yards through the air, also leading Sterling in rushing with 116 yards. Leroy Clarke has scored two touchdowns on the grounds and Dwain Nicholas has three TD catches for the Rangers.

“New Caney has a lot of kids returning on defense,†Minyard said.

“This ought to be a good game. We just have to take care of the football, and if we line up correctly on defense that should take care of it.â€

Directions to Don Ford Stadium: Take US 59 North to Community Drive exit, go left and under the freeway. Stay on the service road, heading south, to Forest Colony Drive. Stadium is on Forest Colony Drive.

If Sterling doesnt beat New Caney by atleast 3 TDs its gonna be another long year for them in district....

It gonna be another long year for them in district regardless of what happens tonight. That district is brutal and they won't make out with a win.
