Bobcatfan4life Posted October 4, 2008 Report Share Posted October 4, 2008 Bobcats secure first win; down Longhorns, 17-7 Marty Elkins The Orange Leader TARKINGTON — Turning up the defensive heat, the Orangefield Bobcats turned back Tarkington in the Longhorns’ own backyard, strolling to their first win of the 2008 campaign with a 17-7 non-district victory. Tarkington (2-2) led 7-3 in the middle of the fourth period before the Bobcats (1-2) rallied back with 14 unanswered points. The Bobcats came back with a blocked punt and the ball rolled to the Tarkington 7. Running back Steven Stone, who had 49 yards on eight carries, put the Bobcats up to stay with a 7-yard sprint into the end zone. After the kickoff, Orangefield’s Kyle Fontenot picked off a Longhorn pass and returned it for a score as the Bobcats captured a 17-7 advantage. The Bobcats went up 3-0 in the second quarter by a smooth 34-yard field goal by Derrick Evans. Tarkinton running back Mike Canary put Tarkington up early in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard touchdown gallop as the Longhorns went 80 yards in 12 plays. Even after that, the Bobcats denied the Longhorns again when Evans picked off a Longhorn pass. The Bobcats finished with 149 yards on 34 rushes. Leading the way was Zach Peevey, who had 51 yards on 18 totes. Bobcat quarterback Jace Statum zipped for 44 yards on seven carries and was 1-for-9 passing for six yards. Tarkington had 252 yards of total offense with 168 coming on the ground and 84 in the air. Tarkington also lost one of four fumbles while the Bobcats didn’t cough up the ball once.
