Bobcatfan4life
'Stangs roll over Falcons, 33-7 Dan Perrine The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Four weeks of sitting in the wings since their last game had the West Orange-Stark Mustangs a bit out-of-sinc. Friday night the Mustangs got back in the saddle again as they defeated the Brookshire Royal Falcons 33-7 at Dan R. Hooks Stadium. West Orange-Stark (3-0) appeared out of rhythm in their execution in the first quarter. The Mustangs gained only four first downs their first two possessions and were kept out of the end zone. “Tonight for about a quarter and three-fourths, we weren’t very sharp early.†Coach Dan Hooks lamented. Brookshire Royal (2-3) actually took the first lead of the game on a miscue by the Mustangs. The Falcons’ Shane Alexander picked up a fumble after a short pass completion by West Orange-Stark and raced 48 yards for the score. Daniel Garcia kicked the point-after to make the score 7-0 with 1:55 to play in the first quarter. West Orange-Stark started to find their game and hardly missed a beat the next possession. Ten plays covered 54 yards and evened the score. Quintavious Garrett took the ball five times for 12 yards. His last carry was good for 9 yards and 6 points. The touchdown was proceeded by a 41-yard bomb to Trey Franks from Ortavious Hypolite. Justin Sparrow knotted the score at 7 with 10:16 until halftime. The second quarter would see the Mustangs reel off 26 unanswered points. All except the first touchdown would be setup by fumble recoveries by the West Orange-Stark defense. After a Mustang punt by Franks pinned Brookshire at its own 11, the Falcons fumbled on the first play and West Orange-Stark’s Terry Rubin recovered at the 7. Hypolite sprinted in on the next play and Sparrow’s kick gave the Mustangs a 14-7 lead. Following the kickoff the Falcons fumbled again on the first play from scrimmage, and Adrian Steen recovered for the Mustangs. Once again it took one play, a 33-yard rainbow between the duet of Hypolite and Franks for the score. The kick failed and WO-S led 20-7 with 2:59 to go to the half. The next Brookshire Royal possession was the same song, third verse. On the third play the Falcons fumbled, and Rubin recovered again for the Mustangs at the Brookshire 23. West Orange-Stark got a first down on a roughing the passer penalty on a play which Hypolite barely missed Garrett for an easy score. Hypolite scored three plays later on an 8-yard bootleg aided by two great blocks from Garrett, the first to help Hypolite avoid being hit for a loss and the second to get him into the end zone. The try for two failed and the Mustangs led at the half 26-7. Their defense held the Falcons to 1 first down in the first half. The Mustangs continued on a roll at the start of the third quarter. WO-S scored on their fourth straight possession following a Falcon turnover. Franks intercepted a pass at the Mustangs’ 3. West Orange-Stark drove 97 yards in 9 plays. Hypolite passed to Mark Roberts for a key first down early in the drive. Hypolite then picked up another first down to overcome a 15-yard penalty two plays earlier against the Mustangs. The next play was a sensational solo effort by Garrett, who swept right end and turned on the after-burners to speed past two or three would by Falcon tacklers on his way to a 45-yard touchdown. Garrett finished the night with 107 yards on 25 carries. Sparrow nailed the final point on the scoreboard with 3:50 to play in the third. The victory served as a final tuneup before the real show starts next week for the Mustangs with district opponent the Silsbee Tigers coming to town. “Its a game, and we needed to play one. We put 33 up there, so we going to really have to get ready because Silsbee will come here in a bad mood,†Hooks said. Silsbee lost to Jasper in its pre-district warmup game.
