Guest wildcat58 Posted October 7, 2008 Report Posted October 7, 2008 memories are an amazing thing, the ability to recall something so clearly that you can feel that your there again is one of our greatest treasures. there are many memories to cherish , but isnt it great how some of our fondest memories for many on these forums are of high school sports from days of long ago............i remember 1970 when i was 9 years old and getting to go to high school football games with my father harold who wrote the sports column for the tiny hardin county herald. he covered local teams, but was a 1958 kirbyville grad, and we attended each kville game and got the other stories mainly from radio rebroadcast. i can still feel the chill of the those october and november nights, the warmth from the hot chocalate, and listening to all of the oldtimers standing at the fence watching the games and telling stories from days gone by. at that age the wildcat players where my heroes, bubba bean, clyde barnett, felix limbrick, euger deets, and others. my passion for high school football in southeast texas was born on those gridirons of old and has never wavered.many of my years have been spent,as this one now, away from home , but i always get scores and stories somehow. phone calls to my younger brother kevin from all over the usa on an early saturday morning, with the same question , who won? now with the internet and this forum i can get instant info. and talk to others of a like interest. yes, i am a kirbyville fan and many of my memories are from their past, but more than that i am a fan of high school football in southeast texas for 38 years now and i remember........ steve worster, doug etheridge and the png indians and their championships, going to school in kirbyville but pretending to be a newton eagle on a crisp saturday after they beat spearman for the state championship, dodge to duhon, permian over png,and 28-19 over TJ,and 21-21 against French(permian advanced a fumble for a Td on the last play of the game, but that was not allowed then) no overtime was available, so a tie was declared.our local teams never did beat mojo.vidor losing over 50 games in a row then in 1975 this opening in the beaumont enterprise.....moses parted the red sea, man walked on the moon and vidor won a football game! after their 10-7 win over forest park. It was one of two games i attended with my father when he turned to me and said "dont run on to the field", then he was the first over the rail! speaking of forest park, i remember the old district the forest park trojans, south park greenies, french buffalos, beaumont charlton pollard royal purples, and the hebert panthers of clifton ozen. i have so many more memories from the past, but they will have to wait till later, but i will reminince more.thank you again for this forum and the opportunity to remember.
Guest LR1969 Posted October 8, 2008 Report Posted October 8, 2008 Great post Wildcat58. One correction though (apparently your memory has faltered (ha)). BCP was the Bulldogs until 1975 (I believe) when they became the Cougars (is that correct? somebody?). Beaumont High was the Royal Purples. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me. As for the losing streak at Vidor. I experienced somewhat the same emotion while watching the Warren Warriors break a 3 year losing streak at Deweyville. As a small newspaper reporter, I vowed (at the beginning of the season) that I would be there when Warren won their first game. I felt sure it would happen that year. So, rather than going to the Reservation or Silsbee/Lumberton/WO-S, etc., I made the trek to Warren games for the first three weeks and covered the "struggling" Warriors. Some thought I was crazy but it finally happened and it stands out as my most memorable experience as a reporter. I covered some playoff games and many other "big" games but nothing compared to the sight of the Warrior fans storming Pirate Stadium after their victory. The fans were great and the stands were packed. It was one for the books. One other memory stands out that probably won't be remembered by many because it had no bearing on the playoff run at all. But, I still remember a rainy night at Lumberton a few years back. Lincoln was still around at the time and they had the Raiders on the ropes with less than a minute to play. I was seated in the pressbox with a PA News reporter. There may have been 100 fans left in the stands (it was nasty). Lincoln had just pulled ahead on a long TD and he looked at me and said (and please don't turn this into a racist rant anyone. it's not meant that way.) "The only hope you have is for that slow white boy to somehow return the kickoff all the way". And, I looked at him and said "Like that's going to happen." Well, I was wrong. He did return it all the way and Lumberton won (I believe) its only game of the season.
Cardinal Supporter Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 Wildcat58 you said that no local teams have beaten MOJO from Odessa Perriman. PNG beat them for the state championship in 1975. I believe the score was PNG 20 and OP 10.
papaw Posted November 24, 2010 Report Posted November 24, 2010 Wildcat58, I am one of the players you mentioned that were your heros in 1970. I just wanted to say we could not have had better fans. Thank you, from an old aggie linebacker. GIG-EM AGGIES beat t u.
