West Brook volleyball blanked

By JOHNNIE WALTERS

October, 8, 2008

Rebecca LaBauve gave many pep talks throughout the night.

The West Brook volleyball coach tried her best to keep her team motivated during breaks and time outs.

The Bruins listened and even talked amongst themselves to help the cause.

But nothing seemed to help the Bruins against Baytown Sterling's monster offense. The Rangers had a total of 37 kills against West Brook in its first district meeting of the season.

In the end, Baytown Sterling beat the Bruins 3-0 in a District 21-5A game. Sterling won 25-21, 25-11, 25-17 at the Bruins gym.

Baytown Sterling, which was tied with Channelview for first place in the district, is 23-9 overall and 4-0 in district. West Brook, which was in third place before last night's contest, is 2-2 in district play.

"Whenever there is a break I always tell them to stay in the game," said LaBauve afterwards. "I try and motivate them the best way I can but we came up on the losing end against Baytown tonight."

West Brook, which was able to block many of Sterling's hits, fell short with its passing game. The Bruins also made many passing errors throughout the match.

"When Sterling hit the ball they weren't able to make a perfect pass on the time," LaBauve said. "It threw them off there game a little. We had some good blocks and plays in the game. But our passing errors cost us the game. We made too many mistakes."

Baytown Sterling was able to clinch the win in Game 3 after they established a 14-6 lead. West Brook scored two consecutive points before the Rangers outscored the Bruins 11-9 to win the final game 25-17.

The Rangers' Priscilla Massengale had 15 kills while teammate Alyssa Cotton had 14. Jessica Holt had 34 assists.

West Brook's Kendelyn Wheaton led the Bruins with nine kills. Lauren Chavez had 10 assists. Teammates Tiffany Schwartzenburg and Maddie Sterling both had six block assists.

"Even though we lost we are still in contention for a playoff spot," LaBauve said. "We play North Shore on Friday and they are in fourth place. Our goal like any other game is to bring home a win."
