Guest mffl Posted October 8, 2008 Report Posted October 8, 2008 Still not a big man... never heard of this kid though. As the old saying goes, one bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Jonathan Garza could certainly attest to that. The super-quick 5-foot-10, 160-pound point guard from Pflugerville High School was getting interest from a number of college programs after a standout summer with the Texas D1 Ambassadors. But only one program stepped up to offer him this fall and that Southland Conference school is where Garza plays on playing his college ball. "I verbally committed to Lamar," Garza said. "I took a visit there a while back and I thought the campus was nice. They just got a new weight room and they redid their locker room, so there's a lot of nice stuff there. I also like the coaches and they've got a good coaching staff." Lamar got a good glimpse of Garza during AAU ball and were the first to offer him a scholarship. While other schools such as Cornell and Cal Poly were also calling, the connection with Lamar head coach Steve Roccaforte's basketball philosophy made the difference for the young floor leader. "He likes his point guard to be in control of the game and gives him the ball 95 percent of the time," Garza said. "I liked that I'd be running the show." With college recruiting out of the way, Garza knows what he needs to do this season to become a bona-fide D-I point guard. "I need to work on my free throw percentage - it's about 85 percent now but I want to get it to 90 percent," Garza said. "I also want to keep on being able to make smart decisions and keep turnovers to a minimum. My dribbling and passing are all good but I can still get those better too."
Guest coachacola Posted October 8, 2008 Report Posted October 8, 2008 Lamar has offered Garza's team 6'8" Osas Ebomwonyi a scholarship: Pflugerville will get great senior leadership from 2009 5'9" PG Jonathan Garza. Garza is the QUICKEST kid in the Greater Austin area. He was hampered by nagging knee injuries in the latter part of the summer but had a strong spring with the Texas D-1 Ambassadors. Jonathan felt the highlight of his summer was when he played in the Manhattan Classic on the campus of Kansas State University. It was there that he caught the eye of Midwest recruiting guru, Jerry Mullin and received his endorsement. He has committed early to Lamar University in Beaumont, and will sign his LOI in November. I think the Southland Conference is a nice fit for him. Emerging P 6'8" Osas Ebomwonyi went into the spring as a relative unknown. A role player behind Okeafor last season, "The Sauce" has developed over the summer into an intimidating shot blocker. Playing with the Texas D-1 Ambassadors he shot up the charts and at the moment he has been offered by Lamar, UT-Arlington, Sam Houston State, Montana State, and The Citadel. Undoubtedly more offers will follow for the nimble Big. His offensive game is really beginning to emerge as well. Basically, the kid does not realize yet how good he can really be. Guest mffl Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Good find Coachacola... so I guess we are trying to lure Garza's friend and AAU teammate?
Guest abovetherim Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Thanks for posting the info on these commits mffl. Our son Osas Ebomwonyi is s senior at Pflugerville High School. My son’s athletic ability and his height at 6’8 just was not enough to get looks from any colleges prior to this summer. My family entrusted TJ Garza with our son’s future and boy did it pay off. Osas went from nothing to five Division I offers from Montana, Lamar, Sam Houston, Citadel and Centenary all from April 2008 to July 2008. We owe a great deal to Mr. Garza for helping our son to have the opportunity to play at the next level and get a college scholarship. Thanks again TJ Garza Mr. & Mrs. Omoryui Ebomwonyi Is this TJ Garza related to Jonathan Garza our other commit? We could be sitting pretty here! http://www.texasrecruit.com/testimonials.html
