No decision yet on softball:

So what's with this discussion of softball?

Federal gender-equity laws will almost certainly require that Lamar adds another women's sport shortly after football returns in 2010.

Although the Board of Regents has approved for Lamar to start softball, the university hasn't yet made a move to do so. Simmons said Lamar hasn't made a final decision on what sport to add - swimming and bowling are other possibilities - but that softball is the clubhouse leader.

Simmons said the university has barely discussed the building of a softball stadium, much less its location.

I'm not sure why softball hasn't got more attention. Plus, a soccer only stadium? I don't understand that one. Millions of dollars for one sport which isn't a big revenue producer. No, I'm not just talking construction but MAINTENANCE as well.

The current track facility can't host the SLC championships.

I promise a soccer/track facility would allow both sports to grow. Track and soccer do not share a competitive season and more money could be raised to fund the endeavor.

Basically softball, baseball, soccer and track could share one field-house. The university just had a press release to announce a student headcount over 13,000 students. I know 3,000 aren't on campus but once football comes on board and if they have some success early enrollment will jump even more.

Again, I think the current location of the current track complex could be better used for beautification and parking. Then Lamar could have two athletic complexes. One the location of the football and basketball facilities and the other and complex for the above mentioned sports.

It is a great location just off the hwy.

Edit: Three athletic complexes with Shelia Umphrey Rec Center/McDonald Gym for volleyball and the tennis complex as the third.

Do I think Lamar needs a facility as large as these? Of course not; these are just to let others know where I got the idea. Lamar could build a 1500-2000 seat complex. It would be nice enough for SLC competition and those of conferences like the Sun Belt.

Good point - ABR3.

Lamar will not be seen as a legitimate T&F school until they have a legitimate track and field facility...and didn't someone say they may trim scholarships from T&F and/or tennis when football gets added?

Very good points. But to have a legit track complex, or soccer complex, you MUST keep the public off of your facilities. Just imagine how run down the Montagne would be in John and Jane Q. Public used it the way the public currently uses the track and the field over at Ty Terrell. The Montagne would be a dump beyond imagination. A commitment has to be made from the TOP, that Lamar's athletic facilities will be used by Lamar University ONLY. These are college facilities, not public parks.

UT's Mike Meyers Track and Soccer Stadium holds over 20K, but of course UT has money coming out their you know what.  But a nice 2000 seat soccer stadium would be nice, then when they get the money they can install a track in the stadium.  Looking at Lamar's website they appear to be resurfacing the Ty Terrell track about every 10 years (last done in 2001), so maybe in 2 or 3 years they will move the track to the soccer stadium.
