LITTLE CYPRESS — One day before becoming road warriors, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears stormed past the Vidor Lady Pirates 25-13, 25-18, 25-12 in District 20-4A action at the Bear Cave Thursday night.

The Lady Bears (21-8, 8-1), alone in second-place in the standings behind Beaumont Ozen, will hit the road for four out of their last five 20-4A matches.

“The kids played really well tonight,†said long-time Lady Bears head coach Vicki Castino, who will lead LC-M to a road trip to Nederland tonight. “The Vidor kids, they’re a young team but they showed plenty of scrappiness tonight.â€

Once again, junior Christine Sicktich spearheaed the LC-M attack. Sicktich collected a match-high 13 kills to go along with eight service points and three aces.

Ashton LaVergne continues her rise as the junior notched 10 kills. Maci Wilcox had four kills while Amy Laughlin, Elissa Tate and Caroline Armstrong added two apiece.

Vidor (0-7 in 20-4A play) received nice outings from Jessica Meyer, Kristin Martel and Chin-Lee Harvey in the loss.

Meyer posted nine kills to pace the Lady Pirates. Martel nabbed seven kills while Harvey collected seven service points, an ace and four kills. Kaitlyn Glass added five kills.

The Lady Bears controlled each game for the most part. They led by as much as 17-5 in Game One. In Game Three, LC-M broke an 8-8 tie when junior Shelby Sanchez served up nine straight points to help push the lead way out of reach.

Sanchez claimed 15 points and served up three aces. Shayna Sheppard and Brittany Wiegand combined for nine points and were very sound on defense.

“Shelby (Sanchez) has given us a big lift with her serve,†said Castino. “We looked at three or four kids to fit that role when the season started and Shelby has answered the call. Her defense has improved a lot too.â€

Now the Lady Bears will prepare to hit the road.

“The playoffs are looking good for us right now but you can’t count your chickens before they hatch,†said Castino. “Playoffs are always a goal but we’re still talking about winning the district. As long as the kids take every match seriously, they have a great shot.â€
