KFDM COOP Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Battlin' Bears head to Lions Den Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — At some point the current Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears deserve some credit. Even at 0-4 overall the Bears are practicing and showing up on Friday nights no matter who the District 20-4A opponent is and how big of underdogs LC-M will be. The long journey to a district contest this week takes the Battlin’ Bears to Livingston to face the 2-2 Lions. The Lions are 2-1 in the district standings after a huge win at Port Neches-Groves last week. The Bears are 0-3 in the district race. One thing is for certain in LC-M Coach Todd Moody’s mind — the Bears will show up Friday and will compete. “I am proud of all our kids for battling through this tough season,†Moody said. “They are still practicing and still responding well to the coaches. That is a credit to them and to their parents.†LC-M will be looking to slow down a Livingston offense which puts up 265 yards a contest. The Lions are led by Jordan Nixon who has carried the ball 55 times for 278 yards and four touchdowns. Quinton Jackson has 254 yards on 33 carries and one score. Livingston quarterback Dustin Harris, who is committed to Texas A&M, is 14-for-36 on the season for 325 yards. Harris has just one touchdown to eight interceptions. “They are on a roll,†Moody said. “What they have done the last two games is line up and run right at you. They are a good football team and they have found their niche. They didn’t change anything in the second half of the PN-G game. In that second half, they just outscored PN-G.†The Lions and Indians were tied 14-14 at the half before Livingston won 34-14 at The Reservation. The Bears are guided on offense by Blake Perry’s 152 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Hunter Gonzales has thrown for 154 yards and rushed for 95 yards on the season. Both Samuel Burton and Zack Sonnier each have six receptions on the year. The Bears offense is averaging 143.3 yards and five points a contest. On defense LC-M is giving up 432.3 yards and 46 points a game. “We have to go up there and play good on defense and try to keep the ball away from those guys,†Moody said. “Hunter has done a good job this season. He is a sophomore thrown into tough competition and had to deal with the hurricane. That really goes for all our players. Our young guys are competing well and our seniors have done a good job of leading the football team.â€
