Ah, I forgot that win Crosby had over North Forest. That surprises me though, how Dayton did against both North Forest and Crosby and then seeing Crosby beat North Forest. Weird stuff. I think Dayton and C.E. King will stay solid throughout the rest of the season, with the DC decided at C.E. King/Dayton, the order of the second 2 will be a tossup between North Forest and Crosby depending on later games.

North Forest already has 3 district losses.

Crosby-BH rivalry still important

By Dave Rogers

Published October 24, 2008

Old-timers will tell you about the fierce neighborhood football rivalry between Crosby and Barbers Hill.

But you only have to go back the last couple of years to see how important the games have been.

Two years ago – the first time the two schools played one another since 1971, Barbers Hill downed Crosby 10-0 and claimed the District 21-4A title.

Last year, Crosby turned the tables for a 48-14 win and claimed the District 21-4A title.

That trimmed Barbers Hill’s lead in the series which began in 1931 and continued nearly every year to 1971 to 22-15-3.

“A lot of the old-timers tell me it used to be a big rivalry,†said Crosby head coach Kevin Flanigan, in his fifth season as Cougars coach.

“All I know is we played them twice and they were important games every time, with playoff implications.â€

Ditto for tonight’s game. Crosby hosts the Eagles at Cougar Stadium at 7 p.m. in a key District 19-4A game.

With three games remaining in the regular season, both are battling for one of the league’s four playoff spots.

Crosby, at 3-1 in district, is in third place behind co-leaders Dayton and C.E. King (4-0), while Barbers Hill is tied with Galena Park for fourth at 2-2.

“We need to win it,†Barbers Hill coach Don Price said “It’s part of a three-game series and I know if we win them all, we make the playoffs.

“That’s the best way (to be assured of reaching the playoffs),†but right now we’re just trying to win this game.â€

Barbers Hill is coming off a 46-13 loss to Dayton while Crosby took a close, 24-21, win over North Forest.

Making it close was the fact that the Cougars, 3-3 overall, were without the services of running back Chance Casey for the second half of the game.

Casey, who ranks No. 2 in the district in rushing with 717 yards and 11 touchdowns, injured his groin in the game, but Flanigan expects he’ll play tonight.

“Chance is fine. He’ll be OK,†the Crosby coach said.

Price expects nothing less.

“He’s an explosive player and their quarterback (Dominic Merka) is a good player and they play sound defense.â€

Flanigan first played against Barbers Hill when coached Orangefield against the Eagles in the 2000 playoffs.

Barbers Hill won that bi-district game 50-0.

“Coach Price and them always do a good job over there. They’re always well coached and they play with a lot of effort. Barbers Hill is a team that does a good job of not making mistakes. They just hang in there and let the other teams beat themselves.â€

Crosby and Barbers Hill rank third and fourth in 19-4A in total offense, averaging 357 and 328 yards per game, respectively. Crosby is fifth in the district in total defense (346 yards allowed per game) and Barbers Hill is seventh (386).

Eagle quarterback Tony Carmona ranks second in the league in passing, with 1,030 yards and 10 touchdowns through the air. Add in his 341 yards and seven touchdowns rushing and Carmona’s has his hands in 17 scores overall for the 2-4 Eagles and 228 yards per game of total offense.

    • Nah… to be completely honest, I think it goes like this.  I’m split on it.    Part of me says that there’s a segment of voters who believe that trump should be the ruler, whatever that means. It’s about 25% of R voters according to polls. They’re the hardcore Trump loyalists… the kind of people who would travel to DC in the winter to hear Trump speak at a rally, then ransack the Capitol… maybe trump doesn’t believe his own “you’ll never have to vote again” rhetoric-but he’s just throwing red meat to the fascism supporting minority of the R party. Kinda like he does when he says racist crap to fire up the minority of his followers (cough, Baddog, cough) who really don’t like brown skins or foreigners. You know, Trump doesn’t really want unilateral power, he just needs to whip up his voters who think he should have unilateral power. It’s possible, right? Then the other side of me sees who he was willing to say or do ANYTHING to remain in office, even after it became obvious that he didn’t have the votes. The fact that he refuses to accept reality as late as the debate last week makes me think, “no… this guy is the real deal, willing to do ANYTHING to get back in office and then willing to do anything to keep it and/or hand it off to his heir apparent.     Over time, things have ping-ponged back and forth between monarchies/fascists who get overrun by the masses, then that form of government (populist) erodes to the point where a strong man seizes power.  I think we fought off socialism/communism as a republic and in 2024 we’re fighting off a facist-style movement where enough of the population has enough faith in one leader to give them absolute power.    But that’s just my opinion. Trump and his hardcore followers (the ones who aren’t in prison for their 1/6 activities represent the biggest internal threat to our democracy that we’ve seen in my lifetime.  The fact that it’s originating from “my” side is what’s particularly troubling to me. I would have expected the left to converge around a popular leftist, not the right.
    • I don’t tune in all the time, but I do like Kat. I’m know the studio audience and tv audience enjoyed the show.
    • It looks like Tyler won this game last year and both team look to be much improved.  I think Lufkin may struggle a little out of the box bringing the QB back in, but the Lufkin D will help in that transition. I see Lufkin by 14 as Tyler should struggle to score. Seeya next week 👊
