While final approval for a football program at UTSA is pending in Austin, the university's athletic department already is preparing for its first big step — hiring a head coach.

Brad Parrott, the associate athletic director for external affairs at UTSA, told the San Antonio Quarterback Club on Monday that the position has drawn interest from current and retired college coaches, as well as assistants in the National Football League, with a decision expected in February.

“The problem certainly has not been a lack of interest by some big-name type of folks,†he said.

It's been rumored they are consulting with R.C. Slocum in the search.

UTSA has a goal of signing its first recruiting class in 2010 and playing its first game in 2011. The school is in negotiations with the city to play games in the Alamodome.

Will Lamar work with UTSA and Texas State and try to move up to a FBS conference together 4 or 5 years from now?

UTSA has a better chance at FBS than any conference school...in fact, this will either severely damage the TXST options at FBS or really help them (if they ride UTSA's coattails into an FBS conference)...

Are they more attractive than McNeese? It's different because in Louisiana, McNeese tends to actually get the players that do not get snagged up by LSU and BCS teams. In fact, the Pokes tend to beat out ULL, ULM and La Tech for players on a consistent basis.

Bull....as usual. Lamar has been there. Lamar has played I-A/FBS. Lamar has played in Bowl games. Lamar is in a large enough

MSA, nearly a half million. The only thing stopping Lamar is Lamar.

Lamar did play in the 1964 Pecan Bowl and the 1961 Tangerine Bowl, but those were pre-D1 days.  Also, by never being that good at football and then dropping it completely pretty much puts LU back on square one as far as football goes.

I do agree with Terror on this, UTSA does have the advantage over everyone else, they are a large school in San Antonio (an attractive market), plus they'll be the only D1 college team in town.

As we've discussed before, Lamar does have some advantages over most of the other SLC schools, it's up to Simmons and Tubbs to take Lamar to the next level.

I Disagree...I rank UTSA the second least likely to go FBS.

1. Texas st (75% chance of going FBS)

2. Lamar (40%)

3. UTSA (15%)

4. SHSU  (10%)

UTSA is in a big market, but a very poor market. San Antonio is a top 10 city in population, but it is ranked

about 40 in wealth, and getting poorer. ATT just pulled of there because its getting bad....Detroit.

Austin is sucking a lot of wealth out of San Antonio. There is no community support for UTSA and

adding football won't change that...UNLESS they recruit heavily in San Antonio and south Texas giving

the team an hispanic flavor. Right now UTSA football doesn't look good. The area is not excited like the Beaumont

area is for Lamar. That needs to change. Maybe it will with a big name coach.

Coach Lamar is not at square one. Lamar and this area has learned a lesson. We are correcting the mistakes of the past.

Lamar football has history, UTSA does not. Advantage, Lamar....
