the spread has to go....it will never work in bridge city....your tailback runs the ball down to the four then the next three plays he doesnt touch the ball ....terrible play calling......even if you run the spread you have to get into the power I and let your tailback give you a chance to score

Last second heroics

Cards TD with :06 left lifts BC past OF, 14-7

The Orange Leader

ORANGEFIELD — Time was a valuable commodity late Friday night at F.L. McClain Stadium.

The Bridge City Cardinals had just enough and the Orangefield Bobcats ran out of seconds.

The Cardinals scored on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Josh Lemoine to Dustin Breaux as Bridge City defeated rival Orangefield, 14-7.

“I saw the line and there was no way I could go down,†Breaux said. “I will sleep a lot better tonight than I did last year.â€

Breaux, now a senior, was thinking back to last year’s 60-35 victory by the Bobcats over the Cardinals (3-4, 1-3).

“It is a wonderful feeling,†Breaux added. “It is really about time we get a big victory. I have enjoyed going from 0-10 to now being here.â€

The Cardinals are now 11-6 all-time against the Bobcats who 1-6 on the season and 0-4 in District 21-3A play. Halloween night was the lowest scoring game between Bridge City and Orangefield since a 2-0 Cardinals’ win in 1961.

“At halftime when it was 0-0, I told the kids they needed to believe we could come out and find a way to win,†Bridge City Coach Cris Stump said. “I told Josh on that last play if nothing was open to throw it away and we could kick the field goal to win. He found Dustin on about the 2 and Breaux did a great job to find the end zone.â€

Lemoine finished with 168 yards on 13-of-22 passing with one interception and two touchdowns. The junior signal caller also ran for 68 yards on 14 carries. Lemoine now has 980 yards passing on the season with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.

“This is a big relief,†Lemoine said. “It was like every other game we have been in all year, it was a dog fight. There was a lot more talking on the field though tonight.â€

The Cardinals were again led by the elusive freshman running back Matt Menard.

Menard finished with 122 yards on 14 carries and now has 398 yards on the ground in 2008.

After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals took their first drive of the second half deep into Bobcats’ territory.

Bridge City faced a 4th-and-2 from the Orangefield 3-yard line but Lemoine was stopped short and the Cardinals were forced to punt.

After an Orangefield punt, the Cardinals put the game’s first points on the board.

After a 9-yard pass to Jerry Landry, Lemoine decided to look deep.

Landry was once again the recipient and this time it was for a 30-yard touchdown strike.

A Devin Bertrand kick made it 7-0 Cardinals with 1:49 left in the third.

The Bobcats wasted no time in answering the Cardinals call.

Orangefield started at the Cardinals’ 27-yard line after Garrett Holmes ran the kick back 49 yards.

it took eight plays for the Bobcats to score yet Chase Parker found the end zone from 1 yard out. Parker finished the night with 27 carries for 117 yards.

A Derrick Evans kick made it 7-7 with 10:34 left in the contest. Parker now has 349 yards on the season with four touchdowns.

Bridge City went on the winning drive with 1:32 showing on the clock.

Lemoine first found Luke Rhodes for 29 yards and then Cameron Dishon for 11 yards.

Two plays later it was Menard who hauled in an 18-yard pass bringing the Cardinals down to the Bobcats’ 18-yard line.

After an incompletion, Lemoine ran the ball himself for nine yards to set up the game-winning strike with Breaux.

The dramatics were not quite over as Orangefield quarterback Jace Statum found Wesley Wiggens for 22 yards. A Bridge City face mask gave the Bobcats one last shot from the Cardinals 32.

The last pass fell incomplete and gives the Cardinals new hope of finishing the season .500.

“To get to .500 would be very emotional for this team,†Stump said. “It would be something these kids and community could be very proud of. They have been through so much and have not blinked an eye. It is a credit to them, our coaches and the families. I am very proud of them.â€

The Cardinals will play host to the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns while Orangefield travels to face the West Orange-Stark Mustangs.
