Nederland, Livingston wins doom Vidor playoff hopes

Dan Perrine

The Orange Leader

VIDOR — The number one defense in district played the number one offense in district with a playoff spot on the line. The Nederland Bulldogs pulled out a tense victory 35-23 over the Vidor Pirates at Ivan Croak Field in Pirate Stadium Friday night.

Nederland (4-4, 4-2) displayed their district leading offense, but it was their defense that was the difference and secured the win for the Bulldogs. Twice Nederland stopped the Pirates in the fourth quarter deep in Bulldog territory to preserve a precarious 5-point lead.

Vidor (5-3, 3-3) executed an onside kick that bounced off the hands of three or four players for both sides before the Pirates recovered at their 47. Five running plays moved the ball to the Nederland 32 as the Pirates faced a fourth-and-one. The Bulldogs’ Jordan Landry penetrated and stopped the Pirate runner for no gain.

The Pirates got the ball back following a punt and began to move down the field again. Chris Teinert connected with Shane Pittman out of the backfield for 16 yards into Nederland’s end of the field. Five more running plays moved the ball to the Bulldog 20. Teinert then tried to crossup the Nederland defense with play action, but Jimmy Swain picked off the pass at the goal line to thwart the Pirates’ chances to take the lead.

On the very next play Nederland plunged a dagger into the Pirates’ heart and their chances for a come back died when the Bulldogs’ Wareall Grogan broke a couple of tackles and raced down the Nederland sideline for an 84-yard touchdown. The extra point gave Nederland a 35-23 lead with just 3:52 to play in the game.

The second half looked like neither defense was on the field as both teams scored their first two possessions after halftime. The on the field fireworks followed the traditional pyrotechnical festivities of the Vidor homecoming.

The Bulldogs opened the second half scoring with Kirby Bellow and Asa Cardenas teaming up for the score on a 23-yard pass. Cardenas finished the night with 6 receptions for 112 yards, and the touchdown gave Nederland a 21-10 lead.

Five running plays were again the formula for Vidor on their drive. Jacob Peevey got the ball rolling with a 43-yard burst. Peevey got the touchdown on a 10-yard run with most of the Vidor offensive line leading the way. Travis Greenway kicked the point-after to narrow the gap to 21-17.

The tandem of Bellow and Cardenas did their routine again on the next Bulldog possession. The first completion between the dynamic duo was good for 13-yards and a first down. Grogan caught a screen from Bellow which would have been a touchdown except for a holding penalty at the 4. Two plays later Bellow found Cardenas in the end zone for the touchdown and the Bulldog lead was back to 11 points.

The lead was reduced again as the Pirates ran off a 13-play drive that ate 6 minutes on the clock. The first 12 plays were on the ground. Devan Dart had the biggest gain of 26 yards on his first carry of the game. The only pass came on play action as Teinert found James Laramore wide open in the back of the end zone for the six points. Vidor tried for two, but Teinert was pressured and his scramble was stopped well short leaving the score 28-23 with 11:13 to play in the game and setting the stage for the dramatic finish.

The teams entered the game tied in the district race for the fourth and final playoff position, and through two quarters only 4 points separated the Pirates and Bulldogs. Nederland took the early lead, but Vidor clawed back with 10 unanswered points before halftime.

The Bulldogs scored the first time they had the ball. Their balanced offensive attack saw Grogan rush 4 times for 19 yards. Bellow completed two passes for first downs to Cardenas good for 48 yards.

Grant Lovelady got the touchdown on a 2-yard run, just crossing the goal line. Taylor Trahan’s kick made the score 7-0 with 5:55 to play in the first quarter.

After Vidor’s Teinert recovered a Bulldog fumble at the Pirates’ 49, Vidor turned the ball over to Pittman. The Pirate running back carried the ball five straight times for 28 yards moving the ball to the Nederland 11. On the next play the Pirates tried an option play, but an errant pitch resulted in the Bulldogs recovering at the 17.

Grogan ran the ball three times for a first down at the 31. He broke the 1,000 yard mark for the season with 183 yards in the game. Bellow fired a strike down the middle to Ryan Brady, who avoided a couple of Pirates at midfield and then sprinted between the hash marks to complete a 69-yard touchdown. Trahan made the score 14-0 with just a minute and a half gone in the second quarter.

Vidor responded immediately, working a 9-play, 56-yard drive to get on the board. The Pirates benefitted from a dead ball penalty assessed on the kickoff against Nederland for a personal foul on the previous touchdown.

Teinert threw to Theron Reynolds for an 18-yard gain and a first down to start the march. The remainder of the drive was on the ground. Reynolds carried five times for 12 yards, and Peevey ran three times for 18 yards including the touchdown from 4 yards out. Greenway added the point-after to cut the Bulldogs lead in half.

The top ranked Pirate defense needed to hold the Bulldogs and got a critical stop on Grogan on third-and-two to force a punt. Taking over at their 43, the Pirates drove down the field to get 27-yard field goal from Greenway with just 2 seconds left in the half to make the score 14-10.

The last game of the regular season will find Vidor at Livingston and Nederland at home against Lumberton.
