KFDM COOP Posted November 7, 2008 Report Posted November 7, 2008 Cougars looking for playoff polish By Nick Cioci The Baytown Sun Published November 7, 2008 The Crosby Cougars are 5-1 in District 19-4A and have already secured a playoff spot but are looking to secure second-place tonight when they host the C.E. King at 7 p.m “This is a fun time of the year for the kids,†Cougar coach Kevin Flanigan said. “They realize it’s not that they aren’t playing for anything, but rather they are playing for second place in district. Along with that, you want to keep that one-loss district record we have and maintain superiority over some other district opponents. “It’s just a pride thing for the kids to have that and do it.†Flanigan also said the kids realize what is on the horizon. “We still take the games week by week,†he said. “But they realize they aren’t just getting better for this game. It’s another week to prepare for the playoffs.†Flanigan said it’s good his team qualified for the playoffs early. “You never want to play the last ball game of the year needing to win to get in or count on someone else to lose or to have to win by so many points,†he said. “It lets us do some things in the last game now and lets us work on some things we couldn’t if we had to win to make the playoffs.†Flanigan said one of the things the Cougars are working on is consistency. “We still have a lot of young kids playing without (running back) Chance (Casey) being out there and moving around to different positions,†he said. “We play well at times and other times we give up big plays, so we are just working to maintain our consistency right now.†Flanigan said Casey played about a quarter in the Cougars’ 20-7 victory over Galena Park. “It’s been huge having the other kids step up around him (Casey),†he said. “It shows a lot that the kids realize they have to step up and have matured as a team. “They realize it’s not about one guy and understand that it’s a team deal.†Galena Park (3-5, 2-4) at Barbers Hill (2-6,2-4) The Eagles host Galena Park tonight at 7 p.m. Key players to watch for the Eagles are Tony Carmona, Caleb Stork and Jay Burditt.
