Guest coachacola Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 New Bob West column: Once upon a time, Walter Umphrey was a pretty fair offensive lineman at Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur. Good enough, in fact, to earn a scholarship to SMU and block for a freshman-team quarterback of some repute named Don Meredith. More than a half century later, Umphrey is still clearing a path for football players. The high-powered Beaumont attorney doesn’t yet know who those players are going to be, but he does know they will be wearing Lamar University uniforms and playing their games in a stadium bearing the name of his law firm.
