Mustang Deja Vu

Second half surge lifts WO-S past Coldspring, 36-8

DEER PARK — It was a case of déjà vu for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs in the first round of the playoffs against the Coldspring Trojans.

Leading just 14-8 at intermission, the Mustangs dominated the second half just like a season ago.

The third-ranked Mustangs erupted for 22 unanswered second-half points to post a 36-8 victory in the Class 3A Region III Division II bidistrict playoffs at Deer Park’s Clyde Abshier Stadium as senior tailback Quintavious Garrett rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries.

WO-S (9-0) led last year’s bidistrict playoff game just 12-7 at the half but exploded with 37 points in the second half en route to a 51-14 victory.

WO-S’s “Chain Gang†defense held the Trojans to 184 yards and to just 39 in the second half.

WO-S put up 328 total yards. Quarterback Ortavious Hypolite completed 6-of-10 passes for 91 yards and rushed 12 times for 73 yards.

“The kids played outstanding, especially after the first quarter,†said Mustang head coach Dan Hooks, who picked up career win No. 260. “We controlled the second half just like we did last year. We were able to cut them up with Garrett, who ran all over the place. Hypolite was cool, calm and collected as usual.â€

Hooks was thrilled with the defensive effort in the second half.

“Coach (Cornel) Thompson gave a ‘State of the Union’ address at the half and the kids responded,†Hooks said. “Coldspring, give them credit, is much-improved over last season. Our old defense was just too darn tough after we made some nice adjustments.â€

WO-S will now face Caldwell (6-3) in the area round of the playoffs next week.

“Caldwell, we don’t know much about them but we’ll find out about them pretty darn quick,†said Hooks. “They have to have a good club to be where they’re at. You just take it one week at a time. All we’ve been worried about is Coldspring.â€

The Mustangs made a statement to start the second half and the Trojans (6-4) had no answer.

Leading 14-8 at intermission, the Mustangs took the opening series of the second half and ran eight straight running plays in a 66-yard scoring drive to up their advantage to 22-8.

Garrett carried four times for 49 yards and finished it off when he gutted the Trojan defense for a 37-yard touchdown gallop off left tackle. Hypolite then found Roderick Simmons on a two-point conversion pass to make it 22-8 with 8:52 left in the third.

Coldspring continued to let the floodgate open.

After Trey Franks brought back a punt 26 yards to the Trojan 26 the Mustangs scored again two plays later when Hypolite hit receiver James Haynes on a short pass to the left and the sprinter did the rest, scooting down the left side for a 24-yard touchdown reception, upping the lead to 29-8 with 6:26 still in the third.

The Mustangs put the icing on the cake with 0:56 remaining when Garrett busted loose for a 53-yard touchdown gallop through the heart of the Trojan defense.

The Trojans struck first blood late in the first period with a perfectly executed five-play, 71-yard scoring march.

Trojan quarterback Chad Allen hooked up with receiver Ashton Perry on a 28-yard strike along the left side that went down to the Mustang 43. On the next play tailback Andrew Leigh sprinted around right end on a 38-yard dash that went to the WO-S 5.

Three plays later Allen punched it into the end zone on a 1-yard sneak. Coldspring then went for the two-point conversion as fullback James Scott barreled in for the points making it 8-0 with 2:28 left in the first quarter.

“It took our kids a little bit to adjust to the speed factor,†said Hooks. “We haven’t seen speed like Coldspring in about four or five weeks. Plus, Coldspring was a physical team. We needed to face a team like that.â€

The Mustangs bounced back in fine fashion, zipping 60 yards in eight plays. Hypolite hit swift receiver Franks on a 30-yard strike down the right sideline that went to the Trojan 25.

The Mustangs drove to the Trojan 13 but eventually faced a fourth-and-11 at the 15. WO-S elected to go for it. Hypolite dropped back quick and found Franks, who ran a beautiful fade route, in the right side of the end zone for a 15-yard scoring toss. The Mustangs elected to go for two to tie it but failed on a Hypolite run attempt as WO-S trailed 8-6 with 11:16 remaining in the half.

After a good defensive hold, the Mustangs went ahead with a 10-play, 56-yard scoring drive. Hypolite ran for 23 yards on the jaunt and tailback Garrett carried six times for 25 yards and capped it with a 2-yard blast up the middle. Hypolite darted off the right side for the two-pint conversion, giving the Mustangs a 14-8 edge with 6:10 left in the half.

Coldspring outgained the Mustangs 145-127 in the first half.

Leigh had seven carries for 61 yards to pace the Trojans.

Hypolite completed 5-of-7 passes for 67 yards in the half. Franks hauled down three receptions for 54 yards.
