Orangefield wins 50-22. The girls played well. Started out slow but as the game progressed we got better and better. I am not sure but I think West Brook only scored maybe 10 points in the 2nd half.

Lady Bobcats baffle West Brook

Gabe Pruett

The Orange Leader

ORANGEFIELD — Not bad for a little 3A school nestled along the Cow Bayou off FM 105.

The Orangefield Lady Bobcats proved they are not scared of any sized foe Tuesday night in the team’s home opener against the 5A Beaumont West Brook Lady Bruins.

The Lady Bobcats were also on the short-end of the height stick around most of the roster yet still improved to 2-0 on the season with a 50-22 victory.

It took a little while for the Lady Bobcats to get going Tuesday yet when they did there was very little the Lady Bruins could do about it.

West Brook led 10-7 after the first period before Orangefield erupted for 17 points in the second.

Orangefield’s pressure defense also came alive in the second period, forcing 13 turnovers and limiting West Brook to a single point.

The Lady Bobcats led 24-11 at the break.

Seniors Allie Beach and Olivia Wagner celebrated the home opener like it was Senior Night in Orangefield.

Beach had 10 points and five rebounds while Wagner was all over the place with 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and eight steals.

Senior Jessica Weldon also had a nice game with six points, three steals and four assists. Freshman Ashton Wagner put in 11 points, including three, three pointers. Sophomore Marissa Wyatt knocked in six points, four rebounds and two assists.

Beach had eight points in the pivotal second period as Orangefield also cut down on their own turnovers in the frame with just seven after 10 in the first.

Orangefield did not slow down after half-time by outscoring their visitors 15-5 in the third.

Weldon had four of her six points after the break and Olivia Wagner scored five.

Leading 39-16 heading into the fourth, Orangefield limited West Brook to two field goals in the fourth period.

The Lady Bobcats got five points from Ashton Wagner and two from Weldon, Olivia Wagner and Aimee Scales. Scales also had four rebounds and three steals in the game.

The Lady Bobcats will look to cut down on the turnovers heading into this weekend’s Nederland Tournament. Orangefield gave the ball away 31 times while forcing 36 turnovers.

Orangefield’s first game in the tournament will be at 10 a.m. Thursday against Baytown Memorial.
