Lady Dogs claim tough win over Orangefield

By Cody Pastorella

The Port Arthur News

NEDERLAND — By no means did Saturday night's 63-55 win over Orangefield come easy, but the Nederland Lady Bulldogs frustrated the Lady Bobcats just enough to keep the NHS Lady Bulldog Classic championship trophy at home this year.

Nederland, which improved to 4-3 on the season, beat Kelly 62-53 earlier in the day to get to the championship. Meanwhile, Orangefield defeated Huffman to advance to the title game.

The Lady Dogs took advantage of their trips to the free throw line by shooting 21-of-34. Nederland also forced the Lady Bobcats into 26 turnovers including nine in the first quarter where the Lady Dogs built an 18-7 advantage.

Orangefield would come storming back, however, as the Lady Cats trimmed Nederland's lead down to 35-34 by the third quarter, a period in which OF outscored the Lady Dogs 18-6.

In fact, the Lady Bobcats opened the second half with a 9-1 run that was highlighted by a Ashton Wagner 3-pointer.

After a Nederland trey from Savanah Desmarais, OF then closed the third frame with a 7-2 run and took a 43-40 lead into the fourth quarter.

The night belonged to Nederland and Pheobe Falcon, however. Falcon answered immediately for Nederland with a 3-pointer to open the final period, knotting the score at 43-43. Falcon led all scorers with 25 points and hit three, treys on the night. Falcon also dropped in four from the charity stripe in the closing minutes.

Buckets were swapped to make the score 47-46 in OF's favor with 6:02 remaining. That's when Nederland's Taylor Carlson, who had 15 points, nailed a three to give the Lady Dogs a 49-47 advantage.

Nederland would not surrender that lead, as it went on to outscore the Lady Cats 14-8 for the remaining minutes. The real dagger for OF came when Nederland's Shaquirra Malveaux sank a 3-ball to push the Lady Dogs' lead to 57-49 with 2:57 left in the game.

In all, Nederland outscored OF 23-12 in the fourth quarter to claim its first ever NHS Classic championship trophy under head coach Chris Smith, who said he was happy for his girls.

"It was a real battle, a very phsycial contest," Smith said. "We're happy to be on the winning side and I'm really pleased with the way the girls fought tonight. They really stepped up and got over the hump tonight by getting this win, a big win against a great team. We need to keep getting better but it's important to come out on top in games like this."

Desmarais contributed with 10 points for Nederland. Meanwhile, OF's top scorers were Allie Beach who dropped in 19, Wagner scored 11 and Marissa Wyatt had 10.

OF dominated the boards, winning the battle by a 33-21 margin. The achillies for the Lady Bobcats, however, was the turnovers. Nederland, meanwhile, only committed 17 to OF's 26.

In other results from the tournament, Kirbyville claimed the third place trophy by knocking off Bridge City 67-62 and then beat Jasper 50-42 in the consolation game.

Bridge City, meanwhile went through West Orange-Stark with a 45-42 score. The Lady Cardinals then faced Kirbyville. The loss to the Lady Wildcats sent BC to the loser's bracket consolation game where it fell 96-24 to Hamshire-Fannett, which lost to Jasper earlier in the day.
