2008 All-Leader Volleyball Team

Van Wade

The Orange Leader

It was a banner season for some local teams and local players during the 2008 high school volleyball season.

There were big matches and big-time hearts shown throughout the campaign.

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears strolled through District 20-4A and owned it. Long-time Lady Bear head coach Vicki Castino led LC-M to its first outright 20-4A crown since 2000.

The Lady Bears cruised to a 13-1 20-4A mark and downed rival Port Neches-Groves twice in loop play.

LC-M, led by junior sensation Christine Sicktich, finished with a stunning 27-9 record before falling to the Dayton Lady Broncos in the bidistrict round of the Class 4A Region III playoffs.

The Orangefield Lady Bobcats proved their might under the guidance of first-year head coach Kristinn Holbrooks.

Orangefield, led by the smooth hitting of Allie Beach and Aimee Scales, captured the third-place playoff position out of District 21-3A by downing rival Bridge City in a third-place play-in game after the two Orange County squads split in the regular district season.

The Lady Bobcats (20-11) went on to topple the Liberty Lady Panthers in four games in the bidistrict round of the playoffs and then fell to 21-3A champion and rival Hamshire-Fannett in the Region III quarterfinals.

The Lady Bobcats’ matches with Bridge City this season were packed with emotion, especially after Hurricane Ike ravaged parts of Orange County, especially Bridge City.

The Lady Bobcats proudly helped their neighbors pick up the pieces, aiding the Lady Cardinals in cleaning out their Bridge City homes and providing much-needed inspiration. Orangefield also let the Lady Cardinals use Bobcat Gym for some practice sessions.
