The search is on for new PN-G head coach

GROVES — The new multi-million Port Neches-Groves High School football stadium needs a new head coach, pronto. On Tuesday, school board members set an “aggressive†time line for getting one on staff.

The job of athletic director/head coach will be posted Wednesday with an application deadline of Jan. 9. A first-round of interviews with a newly-formed and trained committee will be set for Jan. 19-23 and March 2 is set as the preferred start date.

In November, the board appointed longtime Indians coach Matt Burnett to a new position as outdoor athletic complex coordinator and attendance officer, for the 2009-2010 school year. He will work with students at all levels to encourage and motivate them to attend class and coordinate sponsorships and bookings for the Indians’ brand-new, state-of-the-art stadium.

After a public hearing within the board meeting, the board approved an agreement for limitation on appraised value property for TOTAL Petrochemicals. Kevin O’Hanlon, an attorney for the district, said that after two years of regular taxing on a multi-million dollar coking project at TOTAL, the project will be taxed at a $30 million level for eight years, though it is valued at much more.

The state will pick up the tax slack, with expectations of making up the revenue elsewhere through higher revenues through business development, he said.

O’Hanlon said the important thing to remember is that taxes will not go up for district residents.

I think they should make a decision before that...Let the coach come in and start installing his offseason program as well as his offensive and defensive systems.  Are the assistant coaches running offseason right now?  Spring ball is very important when there is a coaching change....They really should speed the process up!!!

Hope the new man is in before March!

I think so. The district will likely move very quickly once the applications are in. They will weed through them and toss most out just on resume's. Then they can get down to the real dirty work of doing the interviews which shouldn't take very long.

Having a Masters is in compliance with Texas law to be an administrator which is what an AD is.  Otherwise, they would have to hire the AD seperate from the HC.  Can anyone confirm this?

I think you're correct. When PNGISD added AD to the job title it caused them to go the Masters route.

This school board is craftier than you think.

A March 2 deadline assures the new coach will not be able to bring in any new coaches with him. Teacher renewals on contracts go out in February for the next year. This allows the district to know who wil return and who will not. Therefore the enitre staff will be retained if "they" so choose.

The good ol' boy system is still in play. Good luck with this one guys. It look like they are going to hire an old coach, near retirement, that doesn't mind working with what is already there.

Good luck finding a "big" hire, coing in half-way (March 2) through an off-season, trying to evaluate talent and coaches. There are 10 other jobs open in the state right now at 4A and 5A that will hire before March 2

You guys sure don't mind playing around with other people's livelyhood do you?  Those that are already there do have wives and kids to feed I'm sure but go ahead and sit at your factory job as an education system/football know it all.

By the way.  Although teachers do get renewed in February, most dont sign contracts until April and even then all teachers/coaches have until the first of July to opt out of that contract.

Where does it say Feb.9th? My poor mid-county education reads it as March 2 as the preferred start date. I do not even see February mentioned in the article. Most comittees that say "1st round" interviews mean there are 2nd rounds and possibly three. That's a quick timeframe to get to a school board, have them accept, and get to work by the 9th of Feb. Logistics look tough.

When you make a living off of the taxpayer's dime, those taxpayer's have the right to say anything.  If the receivers of the taxpayer's dime don't like it then they can go and get a job in the private sector.  It's really simple to understand.

We all have the right to say anything.  Its called freedom of speech.  However, it doesn't make us right just because its "a right".

Teachers and coaches are taxpayers as well.  As a  taxpayer you vote and pay taxes, that is your duty.  Not to be a know it all about things that you aren't educated in.

And no teachers/coaches don't have to kowtow to any "taxpayer".  Teachers/coaches do not work for YOU!.  Go to those coaches faces and tell them what you really think if you are man enough.  Carping anonymously on a message board in the privacy of your living room is not the correct way.

Thats really simple to  understand!
