Olin to stay with Bayou Bowl through 2009

By Dave Rogers

Dick Olin’s departure as Baytown Lee football coach won’t have any effect on Baytown’s annual Bayou Bowl – at least not until 2010.

Olin not only helped bring the summer high school all-star football game to Stallworth Stadium in 2003, but he’s been a tireless worker behind the scenes since.

And that’s why, when he hired on a couple of weeks ago to take over the football program at Lewisville High School, those aware of Olin’s contributions had reason to shudder.

But the second-winningest high school in Baytown history made a Bayou Bowl transition part of his hiring package at Lewisville.

“I told Lewisville I was committed to the Bayou Bowl for this summer and they said that’s OK,†Olin said recently.

Reportedly, part of Olin’s agreement with the school district north of Dallas is that he be allowed to return to Baytown for monthly meetings of the Bayou Bowl steering committee.

“He has committed for the 2009 Bayou Bowl, but after that we’ve got to work out something for 2010,†said Pete Alfaro, Bayou Bowl steering committee president.

“Coach (Chris) Massey of Deer Park has committed to try to fill in for him. We’re going to miss him, no doubt about that. He’s contributed a lot to the Bayou Bowl.â€

Olin and Connie Magourik, president of Baytown’s Amegy Bank, brought the idea of the Bayou Bowl to the city of Baytown and the Baytown Chamber of Commerce embraced it, recalled Alfaro, a former Baytown mayor.

“Coach Olin set a lot of the groundwork,†Alfaro said. “He and Connie Magourik, Tracey Wheeler (Chamber CEO), Mike Shields and I did a lot of work the first and second year to get it going.â€

As a member and past president of the Greater Houston Football Coaches Assocition, Olin had coached in a California all-star game pitting Texas high school all-stars against their peers from California. When that game ceased, he suggested the creation of a Texas-Louisiana contest.

With the GHFCA, Olin has also been involved in choosing the Texas all-star players. He has worked with the visiting coaches and players to make sure their weeklong stay goes smoothly.

Additionally, he has recruited much of the game’s sponsorship, most recently a contract with Nike that will provide equipment for future games, Olin said.

The Bayou Bowl steering committee meets next Jan. 15.

“We will have 2009 Bayou Bowl game as planned, we will continue to have coach Olin’s assistant, coach Massey, coming from Deer Park and he will be participating. The Greater Houston Football Coaches Association will continue to support us,†Alfaro said.

“The challenges will be for 2010 and we’ve got several options we’re pursuing. It’s our intent to continue having the game.â€
