whsalum Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 These 2 clubs are virtually dead even.Deweyville won the first meeting but they know what it's like to play Spurger at home in their own tourney. On a neutral floor I would take D-ville but here I think Spurger will win it in a close one by 4. Spurger-56 Dville-52
Vakidis Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 dville has more than one guy that can put up big points as well as spurger however dville has alot more depth than spurger
BigTimePlayer Posted December 26, 2008 Report Posted December 26, 2008 Who wins the Spurger Tourney?????
whsalum Posted December 27, 2008 Report Posted December 27, 2008 If I read this bracket right the teams are already chosen to play at each round (with the team with the best record winning the tournament).I hate this format because you should have your best 2 teams playing in the final game ,if the brackets are set up correctly. In this tournament you should have Spurger/Deweyville in the final game because they are the 2 best clubs in it.I think Spurger will win it this year in a close game with Deweyville.I know it's hard to evaluate what teams will have when you extend invitations a year ahead of time but this field isn't anywhere close to what it was last year. Logansport/Brookeland was a very good ballgame in last years championship.

But it is better for everyone getting more games and with this format nobody can say thier is a home advantage, most home teams will set up their bracket where they play the easy side of the bracket.
whsalum Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 There is definitely a home court advantage to play in this format.Spurger will play D-ville in the first game at 10:30.The D-ville club will have to get up before daybreak to get to Spurger and play that early. You still can get the same amount of games with the old type brackets.I look at this tournament set up as a way to showcase a game with last years coach. If your gonna do that he should be given a chance to get a little practice in before his team plays in a game like this.Huge difference here in preperation time.

Clarify a couple of things, are you saying that a win for Spurger in this game will be because Deweyville had to get up too early and because the game is on Spurger's court, and the other is that "if" Kirbyville loses to Spurger, that it is because Kirbyville hasn't had enough practice and Spurger has been playing.Ā If that's the case w/ Kirbyville in the Spurger Tourney, maybe Kirbyville should just sit this one out and practice.Ā The way I look @ it is that Spurger's just giving them a few more games to play before they meet up w/ them in the tourney. By the way this young 50/50 Spurger team did walk away w/ the win against Deweyville, lot better showing for Spurger than in the Deweyville tourney.Ā Spurger was up by 28 in the 3rd, starters got more time off than they normally do and bench got more playing time as needed.Ā And still pulled the win!!!! Great job Spurger Pirates
whsalum Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 I am saying there is a huge advantage to playing at home in the early game when the visiting team has to travel a long distance. This is a perfect example. If this game is played at a later start time I think you would see a much tighter ballgame. As far as Kirbyville I wasn't making excuses for them ,just stating a fact. They have been on the basketball court 2 weeks while Spurger has been on it 2 1/2 months.Just found it kind of odd they would schedule there ex coach on what most people would think would be the championship game instead of playing a traditional bracket and letting the best teams wind up in the championship game. This isn't a knock on any of the teams ,it's just my opinion on this type format.

I agree. I see some very valid points in your post.
sports talk Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 what kind of excuse can I get about Spurger's win against Jasper jv? did they play to late in the day it was their 2nd game of the day refs. were one sided etc. ????????????????????????????????
BLUEDOVE3 Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Deweyville vs Spurger? Well if Deweyville beat Hamshire- Fannett, does this mean Spurger can handle Hamshire too?

I wasn't making excuses simply commenting on these type tournament brackets versus the old type brackets where you had to play your way in to the winners bracket. When you won you were rewarded by playing later games and you played in the better gyms.I would hope no one would need an excuse after beating a JV clubĀ ;)

Im pretty sure Spurger can easily walk away with a win against Hamshire-Fannett.Smaller school like Sabine pass and Deweyville did it i think Spurger can add to the list
